This position has the responsibility to produce and underwrite risks appropriate to the defined Classes of business on behalf of the syndicate in accordance with the approved business plan and defined personal authority limits. This role will lead and manage the APAC Energy & Construction team, reporting directly to the Head of Short Tail, APAC, and operate within a matrix structure under the Global Head of Energy & Global Head of Construction.
Responsibilities will include:
- Develop the Energy & Construction Portfolio and proposition in the APAC & MENA regions, contributing to underwriting profit
- Review the underwriting appetite regularly and provide strategic recommendations if changes are required
- Collaborate with the London team to manage overlap, ensuring consistency in underwriting practices wherever applicable
- Develop the Regional underwriting team to foster a positive and winning culture
- Assess and underwrite renewal and new business in a timely and efficient manner in line with the business plan and personal authority limits
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, cedants, and clients
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal procedures
- Analyse terms, specifications, and ratings for prospective and existing business
- Compile underwriting reports as appropriate with insights into portfolio performance
- Generate statistics and analysis of the performance of all risks and accounts
- Compile wordings and proposal forms in alignment with underwriting guidelines
- Report monthly Premium Income figures
- Undertake Business Development to foster growth and expand market presence
- Provide on-the-job training for Underwriting Assistants when required
- Contribute to the setting of strategic plans and take responsibility for the delivery
Skills and Experience required:
- Technical knowledge of underwriting specific to the Energy & Construction business lines, including Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, Power including Renewables and Construction and Engineering
- Broad exposure to distribution streams
- Active involvement in APAC markets including Australia / NZ is essential
- Lloyd’s and London market experience would be an advantage
- ACII qualification preferred
- Strong IT skills, literacy, numerate and having analytical and negotiation skills
- A team player with strong communication skills, both internally and externally
- Ability to build relationships, with capacity to travel and undertake marketing
- Ability to work under pressure, able to commit to and meet deadlines
- Able to take initiative and be a decision maker
- An open and honest approach (integrity)
