JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Care and supervise a class of students in an after-school care setting.

Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, NTU is looking for a Research Fellow with expertise in chemical reactors to develop an improved prototype for a thermocatalytic process.

The project is funded by National Environment Agency, Singapore to address one of the largest problems in waste management – the problem of plastic waste pollution. A significant fraction of plastic waste has substandard quality for mechanical and chemical recycling even after sorting and cleaning. The Research Fellow will work on the design, fabrication and testing of a chemical reactor system that will use pyrolysis-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology for converting these plastic waste streams (specifically, contaminated and rejected plastics) into multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydrogen. The role of Research Fellow is to design a system prototype that can effectively mitigate the impact of impurities from diverse plastic waste streams on production outputs and can be operated in a continuous mode.

Key Responsibilities:

The candidate will be undertaking full research work and administrative duties during the term of employment within the following areas:

• Experimental work on plastic waste conversion into carbon nanotubes and hydrogen.
• Design, procurement, installation and operation of the prototype system;
• Investigation of system performance and determining factors that influence the yield and quality of outputs;
• Development of improvements in system design to mitigate the factors decreasing quality and yield of outputs;
• Development of a continuous process;
• Liaising with vendors regarding the feasibility of scale up and conducting a cost-benefit analysis.
• Publishing research papers and documenting developed intellectual property.
• Reporting the progress to stakeholders (internal and external).

Job Requirements:

• Ph.D. degree in a field relevant to chemical reactor engineering (e.g., Chemical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering or other).
• PhD thesis or postdoctoral experience related to chemical reactor engineering for at least one of the following areas: (a) catalytic reactors, (b) continuous reactors.
• First-author publications in the areas mentioned above.
• High proficiency in English (e.g., TOELF, IELTS, GRE) for preparation of research papers.
• Ability to prepare well-written technical reports and research papers.
• Ability to prepare decent quality presentation decks, figures and illustrations.
• Ability to build formal and informal partnerships and work collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.
• Ability to consistently achieve results, even under challenging circumstances.

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) at NTU Singapore hosts research and education activities in two divisions: Division of Mathematical Sciences (MAS) and Division of Physics and Applied Physics (PAP). MAS covers diverse topics ranging from pure mathematics to the applications of mathematics in cryptography, computing, business, and finance. PAP covers many areas of fundamental and applied physics, including quantum information, condensed matter physics, biophysics, and photonics. Key Responsibilities:

• To prepare and process perovskite nanomaterials.
• To operate, optimize, troubleshoot and maintain femtosecond laser systems.
• To setup and align optical beamlines/setups for transient optical spectroscopy experiments.
• To conduct ultrafast optical spectroscopy studies and nonlinear spectroscopy of novel semiconductors and emergent semiconductor nanostructures.
• To perform data analysis and data interpretation of transient optical spectroscopy experiments independently
• To assist the principal investigator with the writing of research papers.
• To assist the principal investigator with the writing of research grants.
• To assist the principal investigator in the supervision and mentoring of a small research team comprising of post-graduate students and undergraduate students.

Job Requirements:

• Candidate must possess at least a PhD Degree in Physics or Chemistry or Chemical Sciences. PhD candidates who are about to submit their thesis for examination or have submitted their thesis for defence are also welcome to apply.
• In addition, candidate must possess at least a BSc 1st Class/2nd Class Upper Honours Degree in Physics or Chemistry or Chemical Sciences.
• Critical Requirement: Candidate must have a Minimum 3 Years of Research Experience in Ultrafast Lasers and Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy of semiconductor materials.
• Critical Requirement: Candidate must also have a Minimum 3 Years of Research Experience in the study of photophysics in semiconductor systems.
• Excellent knowledge in chemical synthesis, optics, photophysics of semiconductors, charge and quasi-particle dynamics, charge transfer mechanisms, femtosecond lasers, and femtosecond laser spectroscopy is essential. A written and oral test of the candidate’s technical competency of femtosecond lasers, photophysics concepts, and ultrafast optical spectroscopy basics will be conducted during the interview.
• Excellent knowledge in the optical characterization of semiconductor materials (including nanostructures) which includes transient spectroscopy (pump-probe, time-resolved PL), and nonlinear spectroscopy (z-scan and multiphoton spectroscopy).
• Evidence of prior experience with Physics modeling of charge trapping and phonon energy losses in semiconductor systems (i.e., the candidate’s previous works must be published in journals with an impact factor > 10).

· Ensure pupil safety and well-being at all times, light cleaning to ensure environment is clean.

· Providing good supervision of pupils are all times during study, play, meals, recreation time within the centre and if necessary outside the centre during outdoor activities

· Establish academic rigour for pupils under his/her charge

· Coach for pupils under his/her charge in homework completion and preparations for school assessment (including spelling, tests and exams)

· Assist in planning and carrying out weekly craft activities, outdoor games, indoor recreation and holiday programmes together with the other staff

· Establish good and regular communications with parents and provide professional customer service and support

· Conduct oneself in mature, professional manner at all times with colleagues and in the presence of pupils.
