The Role

We require a full-time teacher to work in the Languages & Classics Faculty who can teach Spanish across the full 11-18 age range. The school currently offers Spanish at A Level and IB (Higher and Standard level) and, whilst it is not a pre-requisite, experience in either post-16 pathway, would be an added advantage.

The Faculty is committed to the use of Technology for Learning, so an interest and experience in this methodology is also desirable.

The role reports to Assistant Head of Faculty (Languages - Spanish).

1. Learning & Teaching

• Manage an effective, enthusiastic and safe learning environment.

2. Planning & Development

• Take advantage of some of the many opportunities for professional development offered by Tanglin.
• Take responsibility for their own professional development, and that of colleagues, by occasionally leading departmental or faculty inset or department meetings in an area of expertise.
• Assist the AHOF/HOF in identifying areas for development in Spanish within the broader aims of the school development plan.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the planning and delivery of the schemes of work, including the choice of appropriate teaching and learning methods to meet the needs of the subject, and of different students.
• Support a school culture of innovation that includes technology integration.

3. Management of Resources and the Teaching Environment

• Assist the AHOF in identifying appropriate resources within the limits of the departmental budget.
• Assist the AHOF in ensuring that departmental rooms present stimulating environments, which help to influence students’ attitudes positively towards Spanish.

4. Assessment, Recording & Reporting

• Ensure students’ work is regularly assessed according to Languages and Classics Faculty policy and that homework is in line with school policy.
• Report to parents in accordance with the school’s reporting policy as laid down in the Staff Handbook.
• To use information gained from assessment, recording and reporting procedures to generate further improvement in student achievement.
• Assist the AHOF in the setting and marking of school examinations and to supervise entries for external examinations.

5. Pastoral and Co-Curricular

• Follow the School’s policies and procedures with regard to discipline and behaviour, daily routines, duties, homework, leave of absence, and visits, as laid down in the Staff Handbook.
• Contribute to co-curricular activities that broaden pupils’ experiences and contribute to the general life of the school.

6. Communication and Liaison

• Help to establish a love of language learning through your own enthusiasm for the subject.
• Contribute wholeheartedly to Spanish department activities.

• Liaise with the AHOF and HOF in respect of student records, rewards and sanctions.

UWCSEA delivers both the IB Chinese A Language and Literature course as well as the IB Chinese B Language Aquisition course in Grades 11 and 12. In Grades 9 and 10 we offer our own UWCSEA Chinese courses for First and Foreign Languages. The successful candidate will be experienced in teaching Chinese; including First Language, to this age group. The appointee will be joining a large and highly collaborative Chinese department as well as a broader languages team that includes French, Spanish, Korean, German, Dutch and Japanese teachers.

Person Specifications

• A good degree and a recognised teaching qualification or certification are expected.
• Experience of teaching IBDP Chinese A and B would be highly desirable, and experience or interest in curriculum development is advantageous.
• The ability to engage with students and to engender enthusiasm for learning is a prerequisite for teaching at UWCSEA.

Job Description

• Support teachers in lesson preparation and the implementation of lesson plan (eg. able to conduct small group teaching)
• Support teachers to achieve and monitor students’ individualised goals and objectives
• Assist students in areas of self-care and grooming
• Support teachers in collecting data on behaviour and progress of students, whenever necessary
• Collaborate and support teachers in classroom management matters such as planning and implementing student’s behaviour plans, lesson progress, etc

Job Responsibilities

• Responsible for the preparation and upkeep of teaching resources, arrangement, appearance and learning environment of the classroom.
• Supervise and guide the primary children with their homework
• Plan and deliver activities, lesson and programmes, such as character development programmes in a creative and interesting manner to encourage students’ participation
