JOB DESCRIPTION – VETERINARY NURSE
· Responsible for ensuring the safe and effective administration of anaesthesia and monitoring of animals undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures e.g. MRI imaging. The role involves working closely with veterinarians and other veterinary nurses to provide high standards of care for animal patients.
▪ Perform general anaesthesia for companion animals including exotics species inclusive but not limited to birds, rabbits etc.
o Assess animals pre-operatively, including reviewing medical history and evaluating health status for anaesthesia suitability.
o Prepare and calculate accurate doses of anaesthetic drugs as per the veterinarian’s instructions.
o Perform nursing duties such as placing catheters, preparing patients for general anaesthesia.
o Set up and maintain anaesthesia equipment, ensuring proper functionality and safety.
o Assist in the induction, maintenance, and recovery of animals under general anaesthesia.
▪ Perform general anaesthesia monitoring for patients
o Monitor vital signs (e.g., heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature) during anaesthesia and report any abnormalities to the veterinarian. Be competent in using multiparameter monitors.
o Implement appropriate corrective measures during anaesthesia as directed.
o Ensure smooth recovery post-anaesthesia, including close observation of animal behaviour and vital parameters.
o Administer pain relief medications as prescribed and provide comfort to animals during recovery.
▪ Equipment Management
o Clean and perform regular maintenance checks of anaesthetic equipment and report any malfunctions or need for repairs.
▪ Post general anaesthesia recovering of patients
o Ensure patients are well recovered from general anaesthesia.
o Ensure patients are transferred fully to other departments post general anaesthesia.
▪ Administrative Duties
o Perform stock taking of inventory and drugs and maintain accurate and detailed records of drugs administered, medical records and equipment status.
o Ensure controlled drugs inventory are well maintained and medical records written.
▪ Collaboration with Other Departments
▪ Work collaboratively with veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, and PCA to ensure smooth workflow.
▪ Participate in team meetings, case discussions, and training sessions.
▪ Provide training and guidance to junior staff on anaesthesia protocols and procedures.
▪ Attend in-patient surgical rounds in the morning during scheduled workdays
Requirements:
- Candidate should at least possess a diploma in veterinary technology/nursing. For a senior position, a degree in veterinary medicine would be preferred.
- Experience in a GP veterinary clinic/hospital would be advantageous.
