JOB DESCRIPTION – VET NURSE
▪ The Veterinary Surgical Nurse plays a critical role in assisting veterinarians during surgical procedures and ensuring the highest standards of perioperative care. This includes preparing the surgical area, maintaining aseptic techniques, monitoring patients, and supporting recovery.
▪ Surgical Assistance:
o Assisting the surgical specialist and nurses in the care and treatment of inpatients.
o Prepare the operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies.
o Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures by passing instruments, holding tissues, and maintaining a sterile field.
o Ensure proper functioning of surgical equipment before and during procedures.
▪ Patient Care:
o Conduct pre-operative assessments, including taking vital signs and preparing animals for surgery (e.g., shaving, cleaning surgical sites).
o Monitor patients during surgery, tracking vital signs and maintaining accurate records.
o Provide post-operative care, including monitoring recovery and administering medications as prescribed
o Monitoring and provide in-hospital care to stable post operative patients in the wards.
▪ Patient Admission & Coordination:
o Assist nurses with triage and assist with new case admissions.
▪ Assist with taking radiographs.
▪ Restraining patients for examination and treatments.
▪ Administrative Duties:
o Maintain detailed and accurate records of surgical procedures, patient care, and medications administered.
o Assist in managing surgical inventory, including ordering and stocking supplies.
o Schedule and coordinate surgical appointments as needed.
o Attend in-patient rounds and engage in self-learning such as attending continuing development lectures and reading of books and journals.
o Participate in daily surgical rounds.
Requirements:
- Candidate should at least possess a diploma in veterinary technology/nursing. For a senior position, a degree in veterinary medicine would be preferred.
- Experience in a GP veterinary clinic/hospital would be advantageous.
