The Job

Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, NTU is looking for a Research Fellow with expertise in chemical reactors to develop an improved prototype for a thermocatalytic process.

The project is funded by National Environment Agency, Singapore to address one of the largest problems in waste management – the problem of plastic waste pollution. A significant fraction of plastic waste has substandard quality for mechanical and chemical recycling even after sorting and cleaning. The Research Fellow will work on the design, fabrication and testing of a chemical reactor system that will use pyrolysis-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology for converting these plastic waste streams (specifically, contaminated and rejected plastics) into multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydrogen. The role of Research Fellow is to design a system prototype that can effectively mitigate the impact of impurities from diverse plastic waste streams on production outputs and can be operated in a continuous mode.

Key Responsibilities:

The candidate will be undertaking full research work and administrative duties during the term of employment within the following areas:

• Experimental work on plastic waste conversion into carbon nanotubes and hydrogen.
• Design, procurement, installation and operation of the prototype system;
• Investigation of system performance and determining factors that influence the yield and quality of outputs;
• Development of improvements in system design to mitigate the factors decreasing quality and yield of outputs;
• Development of a continuous process;
• Liaising with vendors regarding the feasibility of scale up and conducting a cost-benefit analysis.
• Publishing research papers and documenting developed intellectual property.
• Reporting the progress to stakeholders (internal and external).

Job Requirements:

• Ph.D. degree in a field relevant to chemical reactor engineering (e.g., Chemical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering or other).
• PhD thesis or postdoctoral experience related to chemical reactor engineering for at least one of the following areas: (a) catalytic reactors, (b) continuous reactors.
• First-author publications in the areas mentioned above.
• High proficiency in English (e.g., TOELF, IELTS, GRE) for preparation of research papers.
• Ability to prepare well-written technical reports and research papers.
• Ability to prepare decent quality presentation decks, figures and illustrations.
• Ability to build formal and informal partnerships and work collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.
• Ability to consistently achieve results, even under challenging circumstances.

Job Description - Human Resource:

· Full-spectrum of HR cum administrations, including Recruitment, Compensations and Benefits, Performance appraisal, Payroll Processing, implementation of policies, staffs' discipline/disputes, and other HR-related functions

· Assist in work pass application and using of WPOL, EPOL, and MyMOM Portal

· Liaise with agent to get the worker details who will be on board

· Co-coordinating for appointments with MOM on work permit card and medical checkup for the same

· Maintain, update and ensure accuracy of all HR records, systems, user guides, internal policies and personnel file

· Manage the complete on-boarding and off-boarding process for all Singaporeans and foreign employees including the administrative work (eg; employment contract, policies, medical claims, insurance matters, and monthly headcount reports, etc.)

· Responsible for payroll computation on the respective department

· Prepare monthly payroll report and summary report for Finance

· Support day-to-day activities of our HR & Admin department, include processing employee data, learning & development, assisting in the hiring process, scholarship and sponsorship, internship program, orientation and make sure all HR operations run smoothly

· Administration of mandatory training including but not limited to monitoring the validity of the training certificate(s), training registration, etc

· Coordinate with MOM listed training centers to book training for new workers, existing workers whenever its necessary

· Specialize in end-to-end recruitment functions which include job posting, screening, and interviewing

· Monitor monthly staff medical / dental claims

· Handle all other HR matters and administration tasks as assigned by the manager

Job Description - Administration:

· Support Manager in Company Administration matters

· Manage and maintain contact list changes

· Arrange accommodation and transportation for our company business partners as well as our staff

· Provide administrative support such as scanning, filling, compiling documents, invoice, etc

· Assist in administration of company insurances, medical claims etc. through insurance broker

· Assist in organizing Company functions and staff welfare activities

· General office administration including but not limited to answering incoming calls, distribute incoming letters, update phone and email listing etc

· Order office supplies/pantries and research new deals and suppliers list

Requirements:

· Candidate must possess at least Diploma / Degree in Human Resource Management or equivalent or Business Administration or related discipline

• Critical Requirement: Candidate must also have a Minimum 3 Years of Research Experience in the study of photophysics in semiconductor systems.
• Excellent knowledge in chemical synthesis, optics, photophysics of semiconductors, charge and quasi-particle dynamics, charge transfer mechanisms, femtosecond lasers, and femtosecond laser spectroscopy is essential. A written and oral test of the candidate’s technical competency of femtosecond lasers, photophysics concepts, and ultrafast optical spectroscopy basics will be conducted during the interview.
• Excellent knowledge in the optical characterization of semiconductor materials (including nanostructures) which includes transient spectroscopy (pump-probe, time-resolved PL), and nonlinear spectroscopy (z-scan and multiphoton spectroscopy).
