Research Assistant/Associate, Analytical Chemistry

We are currently recruiting a highly motivated Research Assistant/Associate in the team of Nanyang Assistant Professor Guan Xue Li. Our group is interested in understanding the roles of microbial lipids in human health and antimicrobial resistance. It is increasingly appreciated that microbial lipids play critical functions in modulation of human metabolic and immune health, as well as infection outcome and treatment responses. We employ an integrated systems biology approach, including development and application of lipidomics, to study the complex repertoire of bacterial lipids and aim to identify lipid metabolic networks which can be modulated for treatment of infections.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team of investigators in LKCMedicine, clinical and industry partners, as well as the wider lipidomics community, including the microbial lipids interest group. This position will expose the candidate to state-of-the-art technologies for lipidomics/ metabolomics, other leading edge research facilities in LKCMedicine and NTU and access to clinical samples, including bacterial isolates from human patients.

Key Responsibilities:

• Optimize bioanalytical workflows for lipid analysis of microbial and mammalian samples from laboratory and clinical sources
• Perform sample preparation and LC-MS/MS analysis
• Assist in maintenance and troubleshooting of HPLCs and mass spectrometers
• Routine operation of LC-MS/MS
• Assist in processing and quality control of lipidomics data
• Support research projects

Key Competencies and Requirements:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences, Bioengineering, Analytical Chemistry related disciplines
• 1-2 years of working experience in bioanalysis using LC-MS, but recent graduates with the right aptitude will be considered
• Hands-on experience with operation and troubleshooting of high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometer(s) preferred

• Highly self-motivated and demonstrate independence with minimal supervision

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform inspections on raw materials, intermediates and finished products by conduct sensory evaluation, carry out physical, analytical tests to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
• Document non-conformance and conduct investigations on customers’ complaint samples or rejected items (Internal & External).
• Issue various documents (TDS, COA) and reply technical enquiry raised internally (e.g. inter-department, affiliates) or externally (e.g by customers).
• Ensure preventive maintenance and external calibration of lab equipment is carried out duly.
• Ensure proper functioning and running of QC laboratories (Chemical, sensory, microbiology, retain sample room) in accordance with ISO9001, 5S, lean principle, ISO14000 and OSHAS 18001 standards and procedures.

Qualifications:

• Minimum Diploma or Degree in Chemistry, Food Science and Technology, Analytical Chemistry or equivalent in years of similar experience.
• Overall work experience of 2 to 3 years in a similar position.
• Basic knowledge & interpretation of gas chromatography, knowledge of densimeter and refractive index equipment preferred.
• Basic knowledge of chemistry.
