DESCARTES PROGRAM

The DesCartes programme is developing a hybrid AI, combining Learning, Knowledge and Reasoning, which has good properties (need for less resources and data, security, robustness, fairness, respect for privacy, ethics), and demonstrated on industrial applications of the smart city (digital energy, monitoring of structures, air traffic control).

The program brings together 80 permanent researchers (half from France, half from Singapore), with the support of large industrial groups (Thales SG, EDF SG, ESI group, CETIM Matcor, Naval Group, ARIA etc.).

The research will take place mainly in Singapore, at the premises of CNRS@CREATE, with a competitive salary and generous funding for missions.

DESCRIPTION

The research work concerns the remote sensing demonstrator developed in the context of the DesCartes project on the use of hybrid artificial intelligence for monitoring, diagnostic and prognostic in structural mechanics in strong connection with the industrial partners: Naval Group and CETIM.

From the already performed researches in the context of Descartes involving inverse identification by data assimilation (images and acoustic spectra) for localizing localized damages (with their sizes and severities) at the laboratory scale, the present position, aims at gaining maturity to prove the validity at the semi-industrial level.

The technologies will apply on pressurized reservoirs, composites and metallic, with data and monitoring provided by the industrial partners, Naval Group and CETIM respectively. Damages, delamination in composites and corrosion in the metallic case, will be identified by using mechanical models (with the reduced model counterparts) ensuring the learning, smart-sensing by locating the adequate sensors (static and piezo-electric) in the optimal location (while minimizing the number of sensors), the real-time data assimilation and the efficient solution (by using hybrid AI) of the associated inverse problems. The integration of all these technologies will constitute the reservoir digital twin.

Building robots and a design automation platform together brings great synergy - the platform helps us develop robots faster than anyone else and the robots allow us to gather data and do experiments at scale. Data gathering can be done through partnerships with other robotics companies, but doing experiments is crucial for grounding the platform in reality and ensuring its usefulness. The grouting robots are already deploying daily at construction sites and bringing value to clients. We are currently negotiating sales worth around 500k USD. With manufacturing cost multiple times lower than companies using a traditional robotic arm, our robots have an ROI in weeks. Your internship would revolve around real-world industry deployments taking us from a TRL of 7 to 9. You may be remunerated with a combination of salary and share options. As an SGInnovate partner company, we can offer a monthly S$3000 SGD in stipend under the SGI Summation program for undergraduates, more for masters, PhD students. The following tracks are available, you would probably be doing a couple of them up to your preference, with examples of what has been done by previous interns:

1. Mechanical experiments and design
   • Experiments - e.g. designing variations to the grout extruder to allow less waste and better reliability
   • Design - e.g. most of the upcoming v4 robot is being designed by interns with Jakub supervising them
2. Mechanical manufacturing, assembly and testing (only for R&D, our manufacturing is outsourced)
   • 3D printing - Slicing prints (often for multi-filament printing), managing and repairing printers (we have Tenlog TL-D3, TL-D5, Ender 3, Prusa i3)
   • Outsourcing manufacturing - specifying cabling, machining etc. to manufacturers
   • Machine tools - making some parts by hand when we need to quickly iterate
   • Assembly - putting in inserts, bolting parts together, waterproofing
   • Testing - testing the robot’s grout extrusion and cleaning, making minor adjustments to make sure everything is running properly and robot produces nice grout lines
3. Electrical experiments and design
   • Design - most of our PCBs have been designed by interns, aiming to minimise free wires in the robot, speed up assembly, allow easy modification where needed. Generally connecting all modules, controlling power, providing a physical user interface…
   • Experiments - e.g. sourcing and testing various motor and driver combinations to pick for our drive system
4. Electrical assembly (only for R&D, our manufacturing is outsourced)
   • Outsourcing production of cable assemblies and PCBs
   • Where necessary to make modifications - soldering PCBs, soldering power cables, crimping cables
5. Embedded programming
   • Writing object oriented C++ code
   • Keeping the code clean and maintainable
6. Robotics DevOps & Real World Industry Trials (expect to be on site 1-2 times a week)
   • Understand the whole project and run our ROS2 stack on real HW.
   • Create reproducible testing methodology and evaluate metrics on the HW.
   • Be in charge of the robots on the construction site.
   • Explore and procure new parts/new materials for robot functionality improvement

The Project Analyst is responsible in ensuring the project is well planned, on-track, resolves issues across different functions immediately and mitigates any potential risks early to avoid project failure. Leads cross functional teams, works in collaboration and co-ordinates with business users, internal and external teams, and vendors to ensure project is succesfully completed within budget & scope, on time and with quality. He/She provides regular progress update to key stakeholders and management, and escalate issues for resolution in a timely manner. He/She also participates in annual workplanning and manage the estimation of budget for new demands.

Project Management Planning

•Plan and acquire the manpower resources requried for the projects, and manage their allocation and utilisation to meet the project objectives.

•Plan and drive the required procurement activities including seeking the project scope and funding approval from the respective approving authority

•Lead and manage the project team, including users, external teams and vendors, in driving the project to meet its objectives, implement in accordance to the agreed scope, budget, timeline and with quality.

The appointee will teach a range of classes from Grade 9 to Grade 12. UWCSEA offers all levels of IB Diploma Mathematics in Grades 11 and 12.
