SUMMARY:
Responsible for the safe, reliable and cost effective maintenance and repair of the fleet and facilities by effectively planning and managing the workshop resources to maximise efficiency and productivity, in the process ensuring that scheduled work is completed on time and within budget, making due allowance for effectively dealing with the unscheduled work that arises during the course of daily operations. In meeting this prime objective, full compliance with all Company policies and procedures are mandatory with particular reference to health, safety and environmental legislation.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES:
- Responsible for running and updating the vehicle inspection, servicing and MOT plans on the computerised fleet management system.
- Responsible for allocating the details of the repeat and breakdown defects to the relevant Engineering Supervisor and ensuring that adequate remedial action is taken.
- Responsible for ensuring that all vehicle records are kept up to date and comply with all company policies, procedures and legislation.
- Identify and establish reasons for poor vehicle component performance, formally reporting such incidences to the Fleet Maintenance Manager with the full facts and implications.
- To manage and motivate the engineering team to achieve good standards of performance, level of commitment, awareness and motivation. Identify training and development needs and arrange appropriate training. Encourage staff to share their skills and knowledge.
- To develop and foster a culture of continuous improvement and problem solving amongst the engineering staff. In conjunction with technical personnel, strive for high levels of diagnostic skills to be attained.
- Undertake the delivery of regular tool box talks and team briefings to the engineering workforce documenting all such occasions and the attendees.
- Responsible for planning and controlling the engineering staff holidays and cover arrangements to ensure there are at all times sufficient levels of resource available on all shifts to meet the operational business requirements.
- Responsible for ensuring that adequate numbers of Engineering staff hold and maintain a valid vocational licence, planning for sufficient vocational licence holders to be on duty to provide adequate resource for workshop and on-the-road support throughout the traffic day.
- Develop the relationship between the stores and the workshop to promote cooperation. Arrange for the correct component parts to be available when scheduling vehicles for repair. Review stock levels to ensure they match demand without exceeding budgeted levels of stock holding.
- Monitor the performance of external contractors undertaking vehicle maintenance and repair to ensure quality of work and compliance with vehicle maintenance standards.
- Produce on a timely basis, engineering cost statements for use in third party insurance recoveries ensuring that all labour and material costs are accurately captured and documented.
- Consult with Trade Union Representatives with the objective of maintaining good industrial relations whilst exercising appropriate management leadership.
- Responsible for ensuring personal knowledge is maintained of all the relevant company policies and procedures and that they are adhered to at all times. Additionally, maintain a working knowledge of current legislation that is relevant to the engineering function.
- To provide cover for the Fleet Maintenance Manager, having available suitably trained support from an engineering supervisor to cover Workshop Planner duties.
- Contribute to the effective management of the engineering function on a day to day basis to develop and maintain good relations with the Operations Dept. who are ultimately the customer.
- Making sure of MAR result achieved at high rating.
- Undertake any additional reasonable duties at the request of the Line Manager.
- Undertake any training and development activities at the request of the Line Manager.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, CONDITIONS SPECIFICATION:
- Minimum of Diploma in engineering.
- Flexibility of working hours if effective control of the 24/7 engineering function is to be maintained.
- Man management, leadership and organisational skills are important and essential qualities that are relevant to the role.
- Computer literate with a broad knowledge of a range of software products.
- Knowledge of all the legislation relevant and necessary for running a safe and reliable vehicle fleet and engineering workshop.
- Conversant with the requirements that ensure safe and legally compliant operation of all workshop and depot plant and equipment.
- Experienced and competent in the use of computerised fleet and inventory management systems.
