Job Description

A Clinical Microbiologist position is available at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in Singapore.

KKH is an 830-bed tertiary-level care hospital that provides obstetric, gynaecological, paediatric and other services. It is part of the SingHealth group of public hospitals. As an academic medical centre, KKH is a teaching hospital for Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

The position is based at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM), which provides a range of comprehensive laboratory services to KKH and includes the Microbiology Service of which this position is a part.

The Clinical Microbiologist will be part of a team of two microbiologists. They will provide diagnostic and consultative clinical microbiology services to the hospital and participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities commensurate with the activities of an academic medical centre. The activities range from bench-level advice and management of the clinical microbiology service, quality control of a medical diagnostic laboratory to communication of critical microbiology results, antimicrobial treatment advice and other consultative services to staff of all clinical disciplines in the hospital. This includes regular interaction with the hospital’s infectious diseases service and the infection control unit, and close collaboration with the other laboratory disciplines.

Requirements

You should be a qualified and experienced medical specialist with relevant quali­fications that are registrable with the Singapore Medical Council, and have a specialist qualification in Microbiology (Pathology/Laboratory Medicine) that can be recognised by the Specialists Accreditation Board.

Also, you should have at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal and have competent clinical skills with the ability to make sound and independent decisions.

The position is available up to Senior Consultant level.

We are currently expanding our team and are looking for a Senior Microbiologist to work on projects on site with a client. In summary, you will be collaborating with peers to design and validate new experimental techniques, and adhere to rigorous quality control standards to ensure the integrity and purity of cell cultures.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and sterilize cell culture media, supplements, and reagents.
• Ensure accurate documentation of media preparation procedures and maintain inventory levels.
• Maintain detailed records of all cell culture activities, documenting parameters such as cell counts, passage numbers, and viability.
• Ensure cleanliness and organization of the laboratory space, including benchtops, equipment, and storage areas.
• Operate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment, including incubators, biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, and microscopes.
• Implement and uphold strict aseptic techniques to prevent contamination of cell cultures.
• Contribute to the development and optimization of protocols for cell culture procedures.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant life science field (e.g., biology, biotechnology, biochemistry). ·
• Min 3 years of relevant working experience in cell culture techniques and aseptic procedures is preferred.
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment and techniques associated with cell culture operations.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.

Job Description

· Duties include working in pre-analytical, analytical, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation, technical validation and inventory management.

· Operates and maintains sophisticated instruments and equipment used in the laboratory.

· Able to properly set up, calibrate, maintain, operate and shut down the analytical instruments.

· Perform all procedures in accordance with Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

· Processes, analyses, verifies and release results within the expected turnaround time.

· Ensure compliance with all requirements of the Laboratory Safety Manual.

· Ensure that “critical value” of lab results is reported timely to the relevant appropriate personnel as well as resolve queries from customers as needed.

· Maintains competence in Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage a team of Technical Executives to provide microbiological and biological testing services to ensure successful performance and timely delivery of the study results
• Review test data and prepare test reports
• Develop and validate new test methodologies
• Interface with customers on sample submissions, job status as well as their enquiries and quotations
• Ensure compliance with laboratory quality management and safety guidelines
• Oversee the proper upkeep and maintenance of test equipment and instruments

Key Requirements:

Responsibilities

• Proficient in performing molecular testing for foodborne bacteria and viruses in food, water and environmental samples
• Provide support to Supervisor, and display leadership to lead the team in the execution of duties in a professional manner
• Procure test kits, reagents and consumables required for molecular testing
• Familiar with the use of PCR and Real-time PCR machines, automated nucleic acid extraction systems and able to interpret/troubleshoot PCR data
• Provide technical training and advice for the Team to ensure that scheduled testing and release activities are completed in a timely manner
• Familiar with the laboratory quality system in accordance with SAC-SINGLAS ISO 17025:2017, and to perform activities to upkeep the laboratory’s quality system.
• Eager and keen to contribute to ideas for laboratory test improvement and advancement; opportunities for enhanced and further method development
