Principal Responsibilities

HSBC is accelerating its research effort on developing advanced computing methods including innovative classical, hybrid and quantum algorithms with a focus on applications within Financial Services. The successful candidate will participate in ongoing academic and business relevant research projects and set new research directions in advanced computing with the aim to advance the field and provide valuable insights and both mid-term and long-term solutions to the business.

Publication of research results in peer reviewed journals and patent submission is strongly encouraged. As well as the research focus, this role will also be involved in contributing to the strategic direction of the bank and leading collaborative engagements with government, industry and university.

This role is part of the Emerging Technologies team and will offer the candidate an incredible opportunity to collaborate and find commercially viable applications for advanced computing architectures ranging from GPU-based physics inspired solvers to state-of-the-art quantum processors. The candidate will be able to rapidly establish themselves as a quantum computing technologist in the broader domain of Financial Services.

The position will be based in Singapore.

• Lead and contribute to original research, based both on your own ideas and relevant areas of the bank that may benefit from advanced computing methods
• Forge strategic alliances with academic and industry luminaries, collaborating to solve complex computational problems tailored to intricate domain challenges
• Engage and build relationships with business units across the bank to test and implement quantum solutions to solve real world business computational challenges

Qualifications

• PhD in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field with demonstrated quantitative background
• 2-3 years post-doctoral experience in either industry or academia
• Experience in quantum algorithm development and application in the areas of optimization, machine learning, or complex simulation
• Published research in at least one of the aforementioned topics
• Demonstrated communication of scientific results at research conferences or other colloquia
• Familiarity with quantum computers and implementation of quantum algorithms on such hardware
• Programming experience in classical and quantum algorithms. Expertise in Python quantum SDKs (qiskit, circ, etc)

• Familiarity with tensor networks and their applications to function approximation and many-body simulation

SingHealth Experimental Medicine Centre runs several core facilities for translational research in SingHealth as well as the National Large Animal Research Facility. These will be linked to the record of each study participant’s individual behaviour and health outcome.

· Compute urban heat island (UHI) intensity to include the interaction of urban morphogenetics such as urban form, sky-view factor, and local temperature anomalies.

· Compute humid-heat stress by integrating spatially averaged ambient meteorological data.

· Assess the spatial distribution of heat health risks, identify the climate adaptation capacity of vulnerable groups and neighbourhoods.

· Evaluate the social impacts of climate change (e.g., temperature, heat stress) on human health and mobility behaviour.

· Compute a novel humid-heat index by using multi-modal data, combining geostatistical, AI, and urban physical modelling, apportioned to the chosen unit of analysis.

The National University Health System Virtual Care Centre (NUHS VCC) is an initiative where trained personnel provides tele-triage to patients and/or their caregivers. VCC will either provide advice and resolve the clinical question or escalate to the VCC clinician where appropriate. 2) Laminar and turbulent flame fundamentals: (i) Experiments with laminar pulsed and turbulent swirl flames. Skills in flame rig design, laser diagnostics and optical methods for flames are needed. (ii) Modelling with combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (DNS, LES), with experience in the fundamentals of turbulent combustion, CFD and massively-parallel computations.

3) High-pressure combustion: Experiments and simulations for reciprocating engines and gas turbines. For the experimental positions, the successful candidate must be skilled in optical diagnostics, engine combustion, swirl combustion, fluids handling and data analysis. For the modelling positions, experience in CFD of engines or gas turbine combustors is a prerequisite.

4) Detonations and ignition risk analysis with CFD. The position involves high-order CFD methods for capturing detonations and turbulent flow analysis for ignition. The successful candidate must be experienced with CFD.

What skills will you need?

All positions require a PhD or equivalent research experience in a combustion topic relevant to the above areas, strong motivation to work in a multi-national collaborative team, and extensive experience with report writing, journal publications, and presentations to academic and industrial settings. Connections with industry are part of the project so the researchers will have the opportunity to collaborate with industrial R&D. The experimental positions need strict adherence to Health & Safety protocols and experience in developing experimental facilities at a professional level.

CARES is leading a new project “Sustainable Manufacture of Molecules and Materials (SM3)”, funded by NRF CREATE programme within the Decarbonisation Grand Challenge. SM3project is a collaboration with NTU, NUS, CARES & the University of Cambridge and EPFL. The broad aim of the project is to develop novel approaches and technologies for fully de-fossilised routes to complex functional molecules and molecular materials. The project will explore novel chemical transformations for conversion of net-zero feedstocks to building blocks typically used in pharma, agrochem and other end applications. The project will also explore novel synthetic methods for conversion of the building blocks into end-use functional molecules. Novel synthesis technologies (photoelectrochemistry, sonochemistry, mechanochemistry, etc), as well as advanced research methods (AI, chemoinformatics, high-throughput synthesis) and process metrics (LCA and technoeconomic analysis) are included in this large project.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill a vacancy of a Research Fellow with a PhD in a relevant field of Computer Science / Chemical Engineering / Chemistry, who combines strong ML/AI expertise with chemical knowledge.

What skills do you have?

The ideal candidate should be skilled in Python programming, experienced with LLMs and chemical reaction databases, and capable of handling reaction data analysis. They should be able to work across disciplines and have a track record of published research.
