NGAP PROJECT

N-GAP: Nanophotonic GAtes with exciton-Polaritons

Many technologies and platforms have been suggested to build a quantum computer, including ions, atoms, electrons, and superconducting materials. Among these options, all-integrated photonic platforms that allow creating complex circuitry with a small footprint are very promising.

In N-GAP we will explore and exploit a hybrid state of light and matter, the excitonic polariton, to create a platform for quantum computing. Exciton polaritons, which emerge from the strong-coupling of an exciton and a photon, exhibit Kerr nonlinearities typically three orders of magnitude stronger than that found in standard photonic nonlinear crystals. The main objective of N-GAP is to further enhance the nonlinearity of the polariton systems to achieve the first experimental realisation of a deterministic CNOT gate based on polariton systems, which is the essential building block of a quantum computer.

DESCRIPTION

Transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 materials (where M=Mo or W, and X=Se or S) are one atom thick 2D layers containing heavy elements (e.g. Mo). These two properties render the optical properties of this material family unique, with electronic optically-active excitations that are extremely robust and that dominate their optical response even above room-temperature. Interestingly, the exciton-exciton interaction strength as well as the excitonic fermionic saturation have been measured to be larger than those predicted by the hydrogenic model describing excitons in conventional bulk semiconductors. This explains why just one single monolayer of TMD is able to display an interaction strength comparable to “thick” single and multiquantum wells. Furthermore, in TMDs this interaction strength can be further enhanced by using either Rydberg excitons, which have displayed an almost 5-times enhancement, charged excitons (i.e. trions), which have shown a factor 10 enhancement, or dipolaritons, which are built upon indirect excitons in stacks of TMDs and which have shown a ~10-fold enhancement.

In N-GAP we plan to exploit this enhanced exciton-exciton (or, equivalently, polariton-polariton) interaction strength by integrating TMDs into vertical and horizontal optical microcavities combining large quality factors and reduced mode volumes, as schematically shown in the Figure below. The research fellow will contribute to the optical spectroscopy of the microcavities paying special attention to the assessment of the polariton-polariton interaction strength under different configurations and to the analysis of the quantum properties of light interacting with such microcavities.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

• Candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent University level diploma in Condensed Matter Physics and/or Photonics and/or Optoelectronics.

Skills, experience, qualifications and knowledge required:
Core Skills requirement:

• Designing and developing scalable data pipelines to collect and process large volumes of data from multiple sources.
• Building physical data models and ETL processes to ensure data quality, integrity, and accessibility.
• Microservices Development: Building and maintaining highly scalable and fault tolerant microservice, including efficient server-side APIs.
• Deployment: Hands on with CI/CD, Jenkins, Ansible, DevOps process, Enterprise integration patterns.
• Hands-on with programming languages (Python, Java etc.) and with orchestration tools like Airflow
• Experience with cloud technologies such as EC2, EMR, Snowflake or similar tools with ability to drive design and data model discussions, hybrid data architecture.
• Proficient in REST services, JSON data, Python 3, Linux/Unix Shell Scripting
• Proficient in modern data management methodologies and architecture e.g.- building data products and implementation of data mesh
• Experience with machine learning libraries and frameworks like LangChain, TruLens, MLFlow, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, or PyTorch
• Deploying machine learning models into production environments and monitoring their performance over time.
• Collecting, cleaning, and analyzing large datasets to train and evaluate machine learning models.
• Ability to understand and integrate cultural differences and work effectively with virtual cross-cultural, cross-border teams.
• Flexibility to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity, and rapid change.
• Experience with senior stakeholder management will be an added advantage.
• Excellent communication (verbal, written, listening), presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Able to analyze complex situations and derive workable actions.
• Able to constructively challenge requirements and current state to increase overall value to the firm.

Education and experience
Wide variety of degrees will be considered, however work experience will be of equal, if not greater importance

• Masters in quantitative fields (Computer Science, Statistics or similar) or at least a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in quantitative fields with minimum of 5 years of relevant data experience in data engineering / MLOps, full stack engineering, preferably in financial organizations
• Experience of working with a multi-cultural, multi-disciplined, globally dispersed teams
• Certifications in relevant technologies or frameworks are a plus.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct needs assessment to develop suitable programmes, developing risk assessment and manage risks involved in programmes.
• Plan for, lead and facilitate programmes- Implement appropriate assessment tools to develop and evaluate group work outcomes.
• Develop and plan group processes and specialised intervention strategies
• Facilitate, evaluate and review group therapy/therapeutic group work sessions to ensure relevance and effectiveness for the population of residents
• Apply restorative practices, including planning and facilitating a restorative circle
