Project Overview

We are seeking a Research Scientist to systematically organize knowledge for a project on “Designing human-AI teams.” The project is part of a five-year research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."

Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary project that aims to dramatically rethink how people and AI systems will work together in the future. To do this, the project seeks to build a strong scientific foundation for how AI can augment (as opposed to replace) humans.

An important goal of the project is to develop a rich ontology of activities that can be performed by human-AI teams. Like categorizing the plants and animals on a little-explored continent, the work will involve cataloging many (a) activities and (b) possible human-computer processes for performing these activities.

To do this, we will develop knowledge graphs that include (1) descriptions of many different types of activities and processes, and (2) classifications of these descriptions into multi-dimensional taxonomies that range from very general types of activities to very specific ones.

These knowledge graphs will then be used to automatically generate promising ways of combining humans and AI systems to perform different tasks. In the long run, we believe these tools will help rapidly (a) identify use cases for new AI capabilities, (b) specify effective processes and task allocations to humans and computers in a given situation, and (c) identify innovative ways to combine people and AI to solve business and societal problems.

Purpose of the post

We are seeking a skilled Research Assistant to support our advanced research in developing new methodologies utilising cutting-edge automation approach to unveil the complex connection between microbial population and human health. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for sample preparation, single-cell isolation workflow optimization, and novel bacterial species characterisation. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work with state-of-the-art single-cell dispensing platform, develop expertise in high-output nanopore sequencing, and contribute to impactful scientific research.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This role will suit an individual passionate about microbiology and omics study to understand host-microbes interactions. The RA will be able to:

1. conduct wet lab experiments;
2. Assist in the isolation, characterisation, and genomic analysis of bacterial samples;

The focus will be on microalgae research and biomass fermentation, to produce high-quality, affordable, and sustainable microbial proteins from microalgae and biomass fermentation that can be further developed into cultured meat and plant-based protein hybrids. Microbial proteins will be cultivated through fermentation and processed using emerging bio-physical techniques for effective biotransformation, to improve digestibility, flavour, and nutritional profile. As a research assistant, you will assist with conducting and monitoring microalgal cultivation bioprocesses via analytical techniques to achieve maximal product titres, yields, and rates. The candidate will work closely with postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. Appointments will be initially made on a 1-year contract, renewable for up to 5 years.

The Departments are seeking candidates who are highly motivated and willing to join us for a challenging and fulfilling appointment as Associate Consultants.

As an Associate Consultant, you will be required to carry out the duties as directed by the Chairman, Medical Board and Head of Department in accordance with the policies and guidelines set by the NUHS and the Ministry of Health (MOH).

• Active in clinical practice;
• Possess basic medical and postgraduate qualifications from the accredited medical universities or medical schools which are registrable with the Singapore Medical Council;
• Must be successfully registered with the Singapore Medical Council and accredited by the Specialist Accreditation Board, Ministry of Health;
• Able to work independently with demonstrated competence in managing patients in a multi-discipline environment; and
• Confident, takes initiatives and a good team player
