Research Assistant, Microbiology/Parasitology

Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine is recruiting a Research Assistant for the Respiratory and Infectious Diseases Programme, Laboratory of Antimicrobial Resistance and Drug Discovery under Professor Pablo Bifani.

Malaria continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality associated with an infectious disease, accounting for 249 million malaria cases and 608,000 deaths in 2022 alone. The lab is interested in the understanding of the mechanisms of drug resistance associated with antimicrobials, including antimalarial drugs. The job entails deciphering the mechanisms of resistance to existing and newly identified antimalarials. The candidate will be required to work with human and simian malarial parasites, Plasmodium falciparum, P. cynomolgi and P. knowlesi and performed forward and reverse genetic experiments to better understand the mechanisms of drug resistance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Bacterial assay development, assay optimization and compound screening.
• Target deconvolution (understanding mechanisms of action and resistance of selected compounds).
• Design and conduct experiments including data collection and analysis.
• Summarize and present the data in lab meetings.
• Develop new research techniques and approaches.
• Perform maintenance of inventory and procurement of laboratory consumables.
• Ensure safe technical practices and procedures.

Key Competencies and Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields.
• Experience working with the malaria parasite and basic molecular biology skills.
• Willing to learn and feel comfortable working with various malaria parasites (primarily) and bacteria.
• Highly adaptable at working with different organisms and techniques.
• Collaborative spirit with internal and external collaborators.

Basic Functions:

Leads a project for assay design and developments, co-ordinate stability studies and marketing supports (trouble shooting assays).

Duties:

• Plan and conduct experiments according to project plans and keep timelines
• Design and conduct investigations and experiments, record and analyze or interpret the results in support of project development objectives, keep accurate records of work undertaken
• Supervise and support other team members in planning and execute experiments
• Follow standard operating procedures and safety guidelines and maintain a clean and orderly environment
• Engage in continuous learning and skill development
• Maintains and implement ISO 13485 / FDA QSR 21 CFR: PART 820 and other relevant International standards and regulations
• Communicate and collaborate with other professionals in the lab
• Ensure necessary and effective support for operations and marketing on technical issues, customer special requirements, complaint and problem solving
• Assist new product clinical trials and new product transfer and provide necessary supports such as developing procedures and standards for product launching
• Conduct initial review for study protocols & reports and other documents to support R&D projects prior to external review
• Identify process problems, suggests improvements, and initiates trouble-shooting.
• Provide adequate and appropriate training for subordinates
• Assist with lab planning and equipment calibration and maintenance
• Other projects as assigned by department manager

Requirements:

– Ability to: Lead a project team in carrying out the task.

– Knowledge of: : Immunodiagnostics, microbiology

– Education: PhD; MSc/MEng; Good Honors degree; or equivalent.

– Experience: At least 2-6 years of relevant work experiences

We are currently recruiting an Assistant Manager to join the Research Achievements, Impact and Strategic Enhancement (RAISE) Unit at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine).

The Research Achievements, Impact and Strategic Enhancement (RAISE) Unit is a relatively new unit that is established to develop strategies to enhance the research impact, visibility and reputation of the school institutionally, nationally and internationally. It sits within the ambit of the LKCMedicine Research Administration and Support Services Department under the Vice Dean of Research Office. You will be part of a dynamic and trailblazing team at the vanguard of highlighting and reporting on the school’s research impact and achievements. You will also work with other departments including the School Faculty, Finance, Office of Innovation and Enterprise (OIE) and Office of Patient Engagement (OPEN).

Responsibilities:

• Organize and staff research programme meetings including minutes writing
• Liaise and work closely with research programme directors to consolidate the research achievements of each programme for reporting to the School Management, Governing Board and Board of Trustees
• To produce PowerPoint slide decks for high-level corporate presentations, reporting purposes and school-wide communications
• To assist the RAISE Unit in the production of materials for visual communication, including report figures and infographics for presentations and reports
• To consolidate updates and information received by the RAISE Unit such as media releases/publicity, publication updates from Faculty, awards and achievements from Faculty
• Assist with the preparation of Dean’s Management Report (quarterly) and the school annual report
• Monitor and track the budget expenditure of internally funded grants and work together with Principal Investigators / Programme Directors to facilitate budget phasing and expenditure when necessary
• Assist to coordinate the annual budget exercise for research division working closely with different stakeholders to ensure budget marksmanship
• Manage the school internal grants which includes post grant operations such as account creation, budget loading, account closure
• Any ad-hoc tasks where required

Requirements:

• Bachelor Degree / Diploma in Sciences, Business Administration, Media, Arts and Design
• Preferably more than 5 years of related working experience in academic / research / healthcare industry
• Experience in designing visuals, infographics, creating professional and attractive powerpoint slides for management
• Experience in minutes writing and generating minutes in a short time frame
• Proficient in Microsoft Office especially MS Powerpoint, MS Excel
• Proficient in Adobe Photoshop or related software
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders
• Meticulous, positive attitude, able to multi-task, and work under pressure and tight deadlines
• Resourceful, strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to develop new ideas and provide conceptual solutions

This is a 2 years contract appointment.
