Research Associate in Assoc Prof Steve Yim's lab

The Air Pollution and Health team's research of Prof. Steve Yim focuses on the interactions between climate and air quality, and the resultant impacts on public health and ecosystem. The team's ongoing research is to develop, advance and utilize the state-of-the-art multi-scale atmospheric models, along with measurement and statistical approaches, to understand the mechanisms that drive the climate-air quality interactions, and evaluate the impacts on human exposure, mosquito abundance and soil acidity.

Particular interests are in investigating air quality impacts of sectoral emissions and transboundary air pollution at multiple spatial scales, studying regional climate change due to land-use changes and global climate change, and evaluating and quantifying the effects of air pollution on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Project Introduction: A pivotal challenge confronted by Southeast Asia (SEA) is the intensification of urban heatwaves. During April-May 2023, SEA experienced the unprecedented ‘once-in-200-year’ heatwave, during which many countries set new temperature records of up to 49°C. In comparison to rural and natural land cover, urban areas typically exhibit temperatures 1 to 3°C higher due to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. This effect exacerbates heat stress during heatwaves, resulting in urban temperature increases ranging from 2 to 8°C. In SEA, urban expansion is anticipated to double or even triple by 2050 under fossil-fuelled development pathway. Meanwhile, the severity and frequency of heatwaves is being escalated in the context of global warming. Amidst these dynamics, the intertwining factors of a growing and ageing urban population add a complex layer to the region's risk and resilience landscape. The expanding urban population amplifies the vulnerability to heatwaves. Resilience, on the other hand, is challenged by the simultaneous ageing of the urban population. An ageing demographic potentially strains existing healthcare systems and support structures, making adaptive measures against urban heatwaves more intricate. In this evolving context, comprehensive risk assessment and tailored resilience strategies are imperative to navigate the complex interplay between rapid urbanisation, warming climate, and the associated escalating heatwave threats, as well as a growing and ageing urban population. Our proposal has three overarching goals. Firstly, we will build the physics-based and machine learning-based modelling systems to better understand the characteristics of SEA urban heatwaves. Secondly, based on the established modelling systems, we will provide quantitative prediction of the frequency-intensity-duration dimensions of SEA urban heatwaves in the future warming climate coupled with urban expansion using the established modelling systems. And thirdly, with projection of future heatwaves, we will conduct social science research to examine how heatwaves in the future would impact local communities. The integration of physics-based modelling and social science research is to facilitate resilience planning and policy making.

The laboratory of Yijie Shen at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences is seeking to hire a research fellow with a solid theoretical background in optical angular momentum, particularly in vortex light fields, who has also conducted relevant research in this area. The research fellow will focus on two main aspects: 1) theoretical research on optical transverse angular momentum, and 2) the generation, measurement, and application of light fields carrying angular momentum or certain polarization states in long pulses.

Optical transverse angular momentum represents a cutting-edge topic in the field of optics. In the past three years, it has garnered significant attention and extensive research within the scientific community, with related work frequently published in top-tier journals. However, the theoretical understanding of optical transverse angular momentum is still in its infancy. The current theoretical frameworks remain unclear and lack solid foundations, with considerable discrepancies in its definition and calculation. Therefore, advancing its theoretical research is crucial, and this is expected to become a prominent research direction in optics in the coming years.

Additionally, experimental work on vortex light fields can also be pursued. While the generation and study of light beams carrying longitudinal angular momentum are already well-established, research on the generation and measurement techniques for light pulses carrying both longitudinal and transverse angular momentum is still in the early stages. Moreover, exploring potential applications of these light fields remains an open frontier. Theoretical studies involving optical vortices in pulses and ultrafast optics require further development to establish a comprehensive research framework.

Project Introduction:

We are seeking an energetic research assistant with background in neuroscience, psychology, and/or exercise science join our team exploring the neurobiological mechanisms of cognitive load using a combination of neuroimaging and brain stimulation techniques.

Singapore is facing a rapidly aging population that is compounded by a low national birth rate and longer life expectancy of our residents. It is expected that by 2050, approximately 25% of the Singaporean population will be over the age of 65 years, which poses significant challenges in healthcare and socioeconomic domains (National Population and Talent Division., 2023). Older adults often experience cognitive aging and decline, including reduced memory, processing speed, and attention, which can negatively impact their quality of life and independence (Lustig et al., 2009). These deficits in executive functioning are a result of structural and functional brain changes that results in the brain becoming less efficient in supporting attentional demands to day-to-day activities (Cox & Deary, 2022). A key theory in cognitive aging is that older adults experience greater cognitive load (Cognitive Load Theory, CLT) during task performance compared to younger adults that is due to inefficient neural processing (Prince et al., 2024; Sweller, 1988). Cognitive load theory posits that the brain has finite working memory capacity to attend to cognitive tasks, and an overload of information will result in a deficit in learning or allocation of attentional resources to deal with cognitive task (Sweller & Chandler, 2009). Thus, as the brain ages and becomes more inefficient in processing and allocating attentional resources to deal with complex tasks, the likelihood of successful task performance, particularly in situations with time pressures, is negative affected. This project will address the following research questions:

1. What is the relationship between cognitive load, neural activity, and vascular response in young versus older adults during simple and complex cognitive task performance?

2. Can non-invasive brain stimulation modulate the neural and vascular responses to cognitive load, and improve cognitive performance in older adults?

We are seeking a Research Fellow who will explore development of new functional materials using pollen or similar materials. These functional materials will have broad potential applications such as stimulus-responsive bioadhesives specifically tailored to the in vivo microenvironment such as water content and pH levels, or mechanical shape morphing devices/structures. We are looking to appoint a full-time Research Associate (History) at the School of Humanities in Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The incumbent will be part of one of a collaborative team of researchers based in NTU’s History Department working on the history of environmental crises and epidemics in colonial Hong Kong led by Assistant Professor Florence Mok. The Research Associate will focus on examining how transnational networks which linked Hong Kong and other places, especially Southeast Asia, affected the development of the Cold War, which in turn influenced state’s response to different kinds of crises, political and natural.

The fellowship position is a fixed term post for 12 months, with a possibility of further extension.

About the Project

This study will make an original contribution to the political, social and environmental history of modern Asia, British colonialism and the Cold War by exploring how the colonial government and the Chinese society in Hong Kong mitigated environmental crises from 1945 to 1980, with the Cold War in the background. This is a period of historical significance: it witnessed growing policy initiatives, increased economic affluence and rising political and social consciousness. It will focus on how the state and popular responses to water shortages, in particular propaganda, were influenced by Cold War politics. The proposed study will use a traditional historical approach of examining published sources and archival manuscripts in Hong Kong and London.

Key Responsibilities:

• Examine the data collected from the Hong Kong Public Records Offices and the National Archives at Kew.
• Carry out literature survey on Hong Kong history and different theories, in particular work Cold War networks between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, different forms of propaganda and approaches of crisis management.
• Coordinate with the History Research Fellow, the History Associate and PI, apply theoretical frameworks to the historical/archival findings.
• Use both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse the effectiveness of the crisis management measures implemented by the colonial government in Hong Kong.
• Work with PI and turn the findings into journal articles for submission.
• Organise seminars and conferences on the research topic.

Job Requirements:

• MA/MPhil in History, specializing in post-war Hong Kong studies/the Cold War/ connections between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
