Data science is an important component of biomedical and translational research, where data of multiple modalities are being constantly generated at unprecedented scale. The Research Data Integration group in the Biomedical Datahub Division of the Bioinformatics Institute (BII), A*STAR, aims to bridge the complexity of computational biology and data science with the needs of biologists and clinicians to drive biological discoveries and predict translational outcomes. One of our immediate challenges is to analyze and integrate and analyze multi-omics, imaging and clinical data generated by biomedical institutes in A*STAR, healthcare institutions and national initiatives in Singapore to improve the usability and interpretability of large-scale multimodal datasets of cancer, metabolic diseases, and other diseases. We are developing data platforms in BII Biomed DAR, integrating healthcare data including clinical and research data, for various diseases including cancer, metabolic diseases and skin diseases. We are seeking a computational scientist to develop analytical, statistical and machine learning methodologies and workflows for analysis and integration of large-scale multi-dimensional omics (bulk, single-cell, spatial), perturbation screens, imaging and clinical data) for these data platforms. Project Overview

We are seeking a Research Engineer to systematically organize knowledge for a project on “Designing human-AI teams.” The project is part of a five-year research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."

Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary project that aims to dramatically rethink how people and AI systems will work together in the future. To do this, the project seeks to build a strong scientific foundation for how AI can augment (as opposed to replace) humans.

An important goal of the project is to develop a rich ontology of activities that can be performed by human-AI teams. Like categorizing the plants and animals on a little-explored continent, the work will involve cataloging many (a) activities and (b) possible human-computer processes for performing these activities.

To do this, we will develop knowledge graphs that include (1) descriptions of many different types of activities and processes, and (2) classifications of these descriptions into multi-dimensional taxonomies that range from very general types of activities to very specific ones.

These knowledge graphs will then be used to automatically generate promising ways of combining humans and AI systems to perform different tasks. In the long run, we believe these tools will help rapidly (a) identify use cases for new AI capabilities, (b) specify effective processes and task allocations to humans and computers in a given situation, and (c) identify innovative ways to combine people and AI to solve business and societal problems.\

The T6 team is led by distinguished scholars, including Profs. Thomas Malone, Charles Fine, Armando Solar-Lezama, Jinhua Zhao, and Abdullah Almaatouq from MIT; Prof. Marcelo Ang from the National University of Singapore; and will be assisted by Prof. Archan Misra from Singapore Management University.

Hosted by CNRS@CREATE, the program ‘Carbon Negative production of advanced Sustainable Aviation Fuels using twin synthetic bacterial consortia Project’ (CNegSAF) is an international collaboration between world leading institutions in France and Singapore including CNRS, Toulouse Biotechnology Institute (TBI), National University of Singapore, A*Star (SIFBI), and Nanyang Technological University. CNegSAF aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using a synthetic bacterial consortium to convert green hydrogen and concentrated waste CO2 (released by chemicals companies) into sustainable aviation biofuels. This innovative research program has the potential to significantly contribute to Singapore’s and the world net-zero emissions target while supplying sustainable aviation fuels to the aviation industry.

DESCRIPTION

To join this team, we are looking for a candidate who will be in charge of enzyme engineering activities using state-of-the-art evolutionary engineering and computational enzyme design techniques. The candidate will be involved in the development of screening protocols, construction and screening of enzyme libraries, designed by in silico molecular modelling. These enzymes will be further used for the creation of novel metabolic pathways for terpenoid production in engineered bacterial strains.
The perspective researcher will work in a multidisciplinary environment with access to high-throughput screening equipments (both in Singapore and Toulouse, France) and have frequent and strong interactions with other scientists involved in metabolic engineering, pathway engineering and computational enzyme design.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

Responsibilities

• Assist M&E Engineer, Superintending Officer Representation (SO Rep) in the supervision and quality assurance of construction works on site.
• Provide standing supervision required by the M&E Engineer and SO Rep.
