Research Associate in Assoc Prof Steve Yim's lab

The Air Pollution and Health team's research of Prof. Steve Yim focuses on the interactions between climate and air quality, and the resultant impacts on public health and ecosystem. The team's ongoing research is to develop, advance and utilize the state-of-the-art multi-scale atmospheric models, along with measurement and statistical approaches, to understand the mechanisms that drive the climate-air quality interactions, and evaluate the impacts on human exposure, mosquito abundance and soil acidity.

Particular interests are in investigating air quality impacts of sectoral emissions and transboundary air pollution at multiple spatial scales, studying regional climate change due to land-use changes and global climate change, and evaluating and quantifying the effects of air pollution on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The team also assesses and develops emission control scenarios to provide scientific-based policy solutions for a sustainable environment in present and future years.

Responsibilities:

The position will be required to develop and apply modeling techniques to simulate the spatial distribution of air pollutants in a city at a high spatial resolution. The model development requires to collect data at different aspects. The position will have to work on the data collection, data processing, model development and application, and data analyses. Centre for Lifelong Learning and Individualised Cognition CLIC is a research collaboration between the University of Cambridge and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and hosted by the Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore (CARES) that aims to develop neuroscience-based interventions for lifelong flexible learning. Launched in October 2020 and funded by the National Research Foundation Singapore, CLIC brings together a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, neuroscientists, linguists and educators who conduct innovative research in the science of learning.

The world of today is constantly evolving to keep pace with advances in technology and globalisation, requiring individuals to adapt and develop new skills to ensure resilience through a culture of lifelong flexible learning. Mental flexibility is required in order to adapt to change, problem-solve creatively in new situations and make the most of opportunities including emerging career opportunities. The capacity for cognitive flexibility is thus central to the modern digital age and our education system needs innovation to ensure citizens are equipped to develop these future skills. For example, major global challenges, including climate change, renewable energy, and food security, will require novel and creative approaches and solutions.

CLIC researchers are developing a neuroscience-based model of flexible learning, including important social contextual factors, in order to inform the design of practical, real-life interventions for use in schools and the workplace. Key Responsibilities:

We are looking for a Research Fellow to develop sensors and mitigants for bacterial contaminations in the cellular agriculture industry. An essential part of this research work is using protein-protein interactions (PPI) of the target bacteria both as basis for sensors development and as targets for mitigation. Peptides based on these PPI interfaces will serve for sensing the target bacteria as well as starting points for non-antibiotic mitigants. The job will include identifying potential target protein-protein interactions of the bacteria, designing and synthesizing peptides derived from these PPI interfaces, evaluating their inhibitory activity and antimicrobial activity and developing more advanced and active derivatives. Experience in peptide design and synthesis and in protein biochemistry is required, with expertise in recombinant protein expression and purification being an advantage. as well as independence and creativity.

The role will focus on design, monitor, and perform experiments within the scope of the assigned research project. Additional duties may include training and collaboration with research staff and students.

Project Introduction:

The aim of the project is to study and evaluate several types of conditions and design parameters of different plasma and laser devices that would allow: (1) generation of laser-induced plasma channel under atmospheric pressure, (2) propagation and maintaining of electrical stream/pulses on the plasma channel, (3) evaluate effects of laser-induced plasma with material interaction. Experimental and simulation studies will be caried out using various setups and software tools to determine the feasibility of generating these laser-induced plasma channel for applications requiring electrical discharge, electrical transport, and spectroscopy.

Requirements:
