The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Associate (Data Scientist / Artificial Intelligence Specialist) in the Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Specifically, utilising data science approaches involving machine learning and artificial intelligence, A/Prof Gruber’s team focuses on the development and validation of biological ageing clocks for clinical translation and application, as well as for drug discovery in model organisms. Purpose of the post

The successful candidate should have a strong background in advanced machine learning, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics techniques with practical applications to biological / -omics data. Specifically, he or she will be responsible for data analysis and for developing advanced computational models, algorithms, and tools to analyse and interpret complex biological datasets derived from multi-omics data. The ideal candidate will combine a strong understanding of advanced statistical, and state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, as well as expertise in programming languages such as R and/or Python with training in biology, biochemistry or a related discipline.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate will work with other team members to develop and validate biological ageing clock algorithms, and will be accountable to the Principle Investigator (PI). The Research Associate will be able to:

1. Develop and apply computational models, algorithms, and tools to analyse and interpret large-scale biological datasets (e.g. clinical, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics);
2. Collaborate with experimental biologists to design and analyse experiments, and interpret results;
3. Stay up-to-date on new computational methods and tools, and apply them to ongoing research projects;
4. Communicate research findings through publications, presentations, and reports;
5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate computational biology approaches with other disciplines (e.g. clinical medicine).

Qualifications

The applicant should:

• Have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering and/or Biology;

Project Overview

We are hiring research engineers interested in advancing the state of the art in data-efficient machine learning at SMART in the new program: Mens, Manus and Machina: How AI empowers people and the city in Singapore (M3S).

With the recent emergence of large language models (LLMs), the research engineers will assist in investigating how data-efficient and resource-efficient techniques, such as data attribution, data selection/reweighting, data valuation, data curation, Bayesian optimization, active learning, can be applied in the context of LLMs (as well as important issues involving AI privacy, model auditability and updatability).

Responsibilities

• Research on topics related to data-efficient machine learning, such as data attribution, data selection/reweighting, data valuation, data curation, Bayesian optimization, and active learning, in the context of LLMs.
• Investigate how these concepts as well as important issues involving AI privacy, model audibility, and updatability can be applied in the context of LLMs.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate experiments to characterise the feasibility and performance of the proposed research ideas.
• Collaborate with other PhD and undergraduate students to publish research results in top-tier conferences and journals, with focus on venues associated with the above-mentioned areas .

The research engineer will be jointly advised by Prof. Daniela Rus (MIT CSAIL), Prof. Alex 'Sandy' Pentland (MIT Media Lab), and Assoc. The Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute (CFI) Singapore is actively seeking a Research Engineer to contribute to a groundbreaking research project. This research explores the efficacy of integrated nature-based solutions in sediment erosional control and coastal protection. The goal is to develop innovative, physically based models that quantify the protective benefits a vegetation meadow can offer to shorelines.

The Research Engineer will participate in experimental research, with a specific focus on studying sediment flux in hybrid solutions to coastal protection. He/she will lead and execute flume experiments, data analysis and field sampling as well as specific tasks which includes planning and conducting experiments, running laboratory analyses, collection and analysis of data, and performing basic administrative duties.

He/she will work need to work with Assistant Professor Gary Lei from Civil and Environmental Engineering and Dr. Ow Yan Xiang from the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) at NUS. Ideally, we are interested in candidates with prior experience with laboratory experiments.
