The Choksi research group is seeking a Research Fellow funded by a grant through the C4T Phase 2 No Cost Extension hosted at the Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERIAN). The Research Fellow will help advance foundational knowledge in understanding the stability and synthesizability of porous materials using computational methods. Research Associate in Assoc Prof Steve Yim's lab

The Air Pollution and Health team's research of Prof. Steve Yim focuses on the interactions between climate and air quality, and the resultant impacts on public health and ecosystem. The team's ongoing research is to develop, advance and utilize the state-of-the-art multi-scale atmospheric models, along with measurement and statistical approaches, to understand the mechanisms that drive the climate-air quality interactions, and evaluate the impacts on human exposure, mosquito abundance and soil acidity.

Particular interests are in investigating air quality impacts of sectoral emissions and transboundary air pollution at multiple spatial scales, studying regional climate change due to land-use changes and global climate change, and evaluating and quantifying the effects of air pollution on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The team also assesses and develops emission control scenarios to provide scientific-based policy solutions for a sustainable environment in present and future years.

Responsibilities:

The position will be required to develop and apply modeling techniques to simulate the spatial distribution of air pollutants in a city at a high spatial resolution. The model development requires to collect data at different aspects. The position will have to work on the data collection, data processing, model development and application, and data analyses. About our Science Programme

The Science Explorers Short-Term Programme (STP) is one of the most exciting programmes available under Specialised Educational Services (SES) division. In line with our Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Science syllabus, our students with dyslexia learn to ‘Explore Science & Enrich Their Minds’! There are five Science Themes; Diversity, Interactions, Systems, Energy and Cycles, which are, included respectively in each Science Explorers STP, throughout the year. These Science Explorers STPs have been designed to support our students from Primary 3 to Primary 6 with their understanding of the Science concepts and processes as well as applications of the conceptual knowledge and skills to answer Science exam questions in an interactive and fun environment.

Our intake is kept to a maximum of 6 students per Science class. In a school-term of 10 weeks, our Science classes are conducted once a week and it is 1 hour per lesson. All teaching materials and students’ worksheets will be provided for conducting the Science theme-based lessons, which include both ‘Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) approach and Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach that encourages students’ engagement during Science lessons.

The duties of DAS Flexi Educational Therapists (Science) include the following:

• Delivering lesson plans face-to-face and/or online lessons that meet the students' needs and abilities, in line with the guidelines of the SES Science curriculum.

The laboratory of Yijie Shen at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences is seeking to hire a research fellow with a solid theoretical background in optical angular momentum, particularly in vortex light fields, who has also conducted relevant research in this area. The research fellow will focus on two main aspects: 1) theoretical research on optical transverse angular momentum, and 2) the generation, measurement, and application of light fields carrying angular momentum or certain polarization states in long pulses.

Optical transverse angular momentum represents a cutting-edge topic in the field of optics. In the past three years, it has garnered significant attention and extensive research within the scientific community, with related work frequently published in top-tier journals. However, the theoretical understanding of optical transverse angular momentum is still in its infancy. The current theoretical frameworks remain unclear and lack solid foundations, with considerable discrepancies in its definition and calculation. Therefore, advancing its theoretical research is crucial, and this is expected to become a prominent research direction in optics in the coming years.

Additionally, experimental work on vortex light fields can also be pursued. While the generation and study of light beams carrying longitudinal angular momentum are already well-established, research on the generation and measurement techniques for light pulses carrying both longitudinal and transverse angular momentum is still in the early stages. Moreover, exploring potential applications of these light fields remains an open frontier. Theoretical studies involving optical vortices in pulses and ultrafast optics require further development to establish a comprehensive research framework.

We are seeking an energetic research assistant with background in neuroscience, psychology, and/or exercise science join our team exploring the neurobiological mechanisms of cognitive load using a combination of neuroimaging and brain stimulation techniques.

Singapore is facing a rapidly aging population that is compounded by a low national birth rate and longer life expectancy of our residents. It is expected that by 2050, approximately 25% of the Singaporean population will be over the age of 65 years, which poses significant challenges in healthcare and socioeconomic domains (National Population and Talent Division., 2023). Older adults often experience cognitive aging and decline, including reduced memory, processing speed, and attention, which can negatively impact their quality of life and independence (Lustig et al., 2009). These deficits in executive functioning are a result of structural and functional brain changes that results in the brain becoming less efficient in supporting attentional demands to day-to-day activities (Cox & Deary, 2022). A key theory in cognitive aging is that older adults experience greater cognitive load (Cognitive Load Theory, CLT) during task performance compared to younger adults that is due to inefficient neural processing (Prince et al., 2024; Sweller, 1988). Cognitive load theory posits that the brain has finite working memory capacity to attend to cognitive tasks, and an overload of information will result in a deficit in learning or allocation of attentional resources to deal with cognitive task (Sweller & Chandler, 2009). Thus, as the brain ages and becomes more inefficient in processing and allocating attentional resources to deal with complex tasks, the likelihood of successful task performance, particularly in situations with time pressures, is negative affected. This project will address the following research questions:

1. What is the relationship between cognitive load, neural activity, and vascular response in young versus older adults during simple and complex cognitive task performance?

2. Can non-invasive brain stimulation modulate the neural and vascular responses to cognitive load, and improve cognitive performance in older adults?

Requirements:

We are seeking a Research Fellow who will explore development of new functional materials using pollen or similar materials. These functional materials will have broad potential applications such as stimulus-responsive bioadhesives specifically tailored to the in vivo microenvironment such as water content and pH levels, or mechanical shape morphing devices/structures.
