Research Associate in Assoc Prof Steve Yim's lab

The Air Pollution and Health team's research of Prof. Steve Yim focuses on the interactions between climate and air quality, and the resultant impacts on public health and ecosystem. The team's ongoing research is to develop, advance and utilize the state-of-the-art multi-scale atmospheric models, along with measurement and statistical approaches, to understand the mechanisms that drive the climate-air quality interactions, and evaluate the impacts on human exposure, mosquito abundance and soil acidity.

Particular interests are in investigating air quality impacts of sectoral emissions and transboundary air pollution at multiple spatial scales, studying regional climate change due to land-use changes and global climate change, and evaluating and quantifying the effects of air pollution on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The team also assesses and develops emission control scenarios to provide scientific-based policy solutions for a sustainable environment in present and future years.

Responsibilities:

The position will be required to develop and apply modeling techniques to simulate the spatial distribution of air pollutants in a city at a high spatial resolution. The model development requires to collect data at different aspects. The position will have to work on the data collection, data processing, model development and application, and data analyses. The Choksi research group is seeking a Research Fellow funded by a grant through the C4T Phase 2 No Cost Extension hosted at the Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERIAN). The Research Fellow will help advance foundational knowledge in understanding the stability and synthesizability of porous materials using computational methods. About our Science Programme

The Science Explorers Short-Term Programme (STP) is one of the most exciting programmes available under Specialised Educational Services (SES) division. In line with our Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Science syllabus, our students with dyslexia learn to ‘Explore Science & Enrich Their Minds’! There are five Science Themes; Diversity, Interactions, Systems, Energy and Cycles, which are, included respectively in each Science Explorers STP, throughout the year. These Science Explorers STPs have been designed to support our students from Primary 3 to Primary 6 with their understanding of the Science concepts and processes as well as applications of the conceptual knowledge and skills to answer Science exam questions in an interactive and fun environment.

Our intake is kept to a maximum of 6 students per Science class. In a school-term of 10 weeks, our Science classes are conducted once a week and it is 1 hour per lesson. We are seeking a Research Fellow who will explore development of new functional materials using pollen or similar materials. These functional materials will have broad potential applications such as stimulus-responsive bioadhesives specifically tailored to the in vivo microenvironment such as water content and pH levels, or mechanical shape morphing devices/structures. These novel materials are engineered to provide robust functions triggered by internal stimuli, e.g., on-demand adhesion and debonding and degradation properties. Project Title: Projecting Urban Heatwaves and Building Resilience in Singapore and Southeast Asia

Project Introduction: A pivotal challenge confronted by Southeast Asia (SEA) is the intensification of urban heatwaves. During April-May 2023, SEA experienced the unprecedented ‘once-in-200-year’ heatwave, during which many countries set new temperature records of up to 49°C. In comparison to rural and natural land cover, urban areas typically exhibit temperatures 1 to 3°C higher due to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. This effect exacerbates heat stress during heatwaves, resulting in urban temperature increases ranging from 2 to 8°C. In SEA, urban expansion is anticipated to double or even triple by 2050 under fossil-fuelled development pathway. Meanwhile, the severity and frequency of heatwaves is being escalated in the context of global warming. Amidst these dynamics, the intertwining factors of a growing and ageing urban population add a complex layer to the region's risk and resilience landscape. The expanding urban population amplifies the vulnerability to heatwaves. Resilience, on the other hand, is challenged by the simultaneous ageing of the urban population. An ageing demographic potentially strains existing healthcare systems and support structures, making adaptive measures against urban heatwaves more intricate. In this evolving context, comprehensive risk assessment and tailored resilience strategies are imperative to navigate the complex interplay between rapid urbanisation, warming climate, and the associated escalating heatwave threats, as well as a growing and ageing urban population. Our proposal has three overarching goals. Firstly, we will build the physics-based and machine learning-based modelling systems to better understand the characteristics of SEA urban heatwaves. Secondly, based on the established modelling systems, we will provide quantitative prediction of the frequency-intensity-duration dimensions of SEA urban heatwaves in the future warming climate coupled with urban expansion using the established modelling systems. And thirdly, with projection of future heatwaves, we will conduct social science research to examine how heatwaves in the future would impact local communities. The integration of physics-based modelling and social science research is to facilitate resilience planning and policy making.
