Responsibilities

We are seeking to recruit a proactive and motivated research assistant to join the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at the National University of Singapore (NUS) launched on 5 September 2024, the first of its kind in Asia to advance research in alternative proteins. Led by experts from NUS and research institutes in Singapore, the Centre aims to drive global food security and accelerate regional innovation. The focus will be on microalgae research and biomass fermentation, to produce high-quality, affordable, and sustainable microbial proteins from microalgae and biomass fermentation that can be further developed into cultured meat and plant-based protein hybrids. Microbial proteins will be cultivated through fermentation and processed using emerging bio-physical techniques for effective biotransformation, to improve digestibility, flavour, and nutritional profile. As a research assistant, you will assist with conducting and monitoring microalgal cultivation bioprocesses via analytical techniques to achieve maximal product titres, yields, and rates. You will also assist with processing the microbial proteins for optimal digestibility, flavour, and nutritional profiles. The candidate will work closely with postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. Appointments will be initially made on a 1-year contract, renewable for up to 5 years.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct research activities in accordance with the Centre objectives involving but not limited to:
i. Conversion of industrial food side-streams into media suitable for microalgae cultivation.
ii. Microalgae cultivations in flask and benchtop bioreactors under batch, fed batch, or continuous modes.
iii. Conduct chromatographic, spectroscopic, and fluorescent analyses to monitor microalgae growth.

Responsibilities:

Multimodal data analytics for target, biomarker discovery and MoA elucidation

• Develop and implement computational strategies for integrated analysis across diverse biological datasets, including but not limited to genetics/genomics, transcriptomics (bulk- and single-cell RNAseq) and proteomics data.
• Employ state-of-the-art machine learning and AI techniques to uncover patterns in extensive biological datasets, developing predictive models that inform therapeutic strategies.
• Collaborate with cross-functional colleagues to drive the data-driven discovery and prioritization of novel therapeutic targets and clinically relevant biomarkers, integrating advanced analytics to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of action.

Data Integration and automation

• Evaluate and harmonize multi-dimensional data to ensure data quality and consistency.
• Architect and manage databases for cross-functional biological data from public and proprietary sources.

Collaborative Research and strategic partnerships

• Work closely with experimental biologists, chemists, and other computational biologists to design experiments, analyse results, and communicate findings in scientific reports and presentations.
• Establish and maintain partnerships with leading computational biology, data science, and AI entities both locally and globally, serving as the computational biology liaison to ensure effective communication and alignment of objectives between external partners and EDDC’s internal project teams.

Innovation and Continuous Learning

• Stay abreast of the latest developments in bioinformatics, data science, machine learning, and AI as they pertain to drug discovery and development.
• Implement new technologies and methodologies to refine in-house workflows and enhance EDDC’s computational platforms.

Job Requirements:

• PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on data analytics and machine learning in biological contexts. Minimally 5 years of postdoc experience or equivalent in industry settings.
• Demonstrated experience in multi-omics data analysis (eg. genetics/genomics, bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, proteomics, etc.) and the application of machine learning in biological research.

The lab of Computational Transcriptomics at the Genome Institute of Singapore (led by Dr Jonathan Göke) is offering a position for a postdoctoral fellow to develop methods for analyzing long read transcriptomics data. The successful candidate will lead software and methods development to analyze RNA modifications from nanopore direct RNA-Seq data. The candidate is expected to develop new supervised and unsupervised approaches using statistics and machine learning, and to apply them to clinical samples. The position will be in close collaboration with experimental and clinical collaborators and industry partners, and provide full access to the capabilities of the sequencing platform.
