CARES is leading a new project “Sustainable Manufacture of Molecules and Materials (SM3)”, funded by NRF CREATE programme within the Decarbonisation Grand Challenge. SM3project is a collaboration with NTU, NUS, CARES & the University of Cambridge and EPFL. The broad aim of the project is to develop novel approaches and technologies for fully de-fossilised routes to complex functional molecules and molecular materials. The project will explore novel chemical transformations for conversion of net-zero feedstocks to building blocks typically used in pharma, agrochem and other end applications. Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill a vacancy of a Research Fellow or a Senior Research Fellow. The successful candidate would have a PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with a strong interest in Process Systems Engineering and Machine Learning (AI) for Chemical Engineering. The ideal candidate would have experience in developing first principle process models in Matlab/gPROMS or Python, process optimization, machine learning for chemical processes.

Who are we looking for?

A postdoctoral research fellow to conduct the following work activities:

· Coordinate the work package activities and report on these activities and their results.

· Daily supervise other researchers and their activities in the work package.

· Take the lead in writing articles for publication in reputable journals.

· Collect open-source data and fuse this data towards a comprehensive and integrated city model of Singapore.

· Transform this data for use in a knowledge graph.

· Apply data-driven clustering techniques to define urban exposure archetypes.

· Apply urban analytics and deep learning to understand and demonstrate relevant data correlations.

What skills will you need?

· A doctoral degree in architecture, urban planning, building physics, and or a strongly related field from a reputable university.

· Expertise in development of AI driven physics based deep learning models, with an emphasis on graph-oriented data and network science.

· Compute humid-heat stress by integrating spatially averaged ambient meteorological data.

· Assess the spatial distribution of heat health risks, identify the climate adaptation capacity of vulnerable groups and neighbourhoods.

· Evaluate the social impacts of climate change (e.g., temperature, heat stress) on human health and mobility behaviour.

· Compute a novel humid-heat index by using multi-modal data, combining geostatistical, AI, and urban physical modelling, apportioned to the chosen unit of analysis.

· A Master’s degree in urban planning or geography or a strongly related field from a reputable university.

In the context of the multi-partner project HYCOMBS (https://www.cares.cam.ac.uk/research/hycombs/), which is part of Singapore’s CREATE investment in Decarbonisation (https://www.nrf.gov.sg/files/Media_Release_CREATE_Decarbonisation_Challenge_with_ANNEX_A__B_final.pdf), a large number of positions have become available to research hydrogen and ammonia combustion.

All the positions are held in Singapore and will normally last 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility to extend if funding is available. Who are we looking for?

We are seeking highly motivated combustion researchers to work in the following areas:

1) Kinetics: (i) Experiments with flow reactors and laminar flames. The successful applicant will be skilled in analytical combustion chemistry systems such as gas chromatography and laser detection; (ii) Development of detailed and reduced chemical mechanisms. Experience in combustion chemistry modelling is needed.

2) Laminar and turbulent flame fundamentals: (i) Experiments with laminar pulsed and turbulent swirl flames. Skills in flame rig design, laser diagnostics and optical methods for flames are needed. (ii) Modelling with combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (DNS, LES), with experience in the fundamentals of turbulent combustion, CFD and massively-parallel computations.

3) High-pressure combustion: Experiments and simulations for reciprocating engines and gas turbines. For the experimental positions, the successful candidate must be skilled in optical diagnostics, engine combustion, swirl combustion, fluids handling and data analysis. For the modelling positions, experience in CFD of engines or gas turbine combustors is a prerequisite.

4) Detonations and ignition risk analysis with CFD. The position involves high-order CFD methods for capturing detonations and turbulent flow analysis for ignition. The successful candidate must be experienced with CFD.

The synthetic chemist at CARES will be supervised by Prof. Gaunt and will join a “Synthesis Team” of the larger SM3 project, which will involve close collaboration with Profs. Position Overview: As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be involved in designing and developing catalytic activation modes that lead to new synthetic transformations. Synthetic chemists are uniquely placed to leverage catalytic systems to design reactions that control structure and function at a molecular level in all types of bioactive complex molecules. We are looking for experts in synthetic chemistry who are interested in taking on new challenges and exploiting their experience to explore new areas of catalyst-controlled reactivity that lead to an expansion of accessible chemical space.
