Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asia Research Institute (Science, Technology and Society Research Cluster)

The Asia Research Institute invites outstanding, active researchers from around the world to work on an important piece of Asia-centred research in the social sciences or humanities.

Apart from the quality of the research proposal, and the applicant’s publication track record, positions will be awarded on the basis of the relationship of their research topic to the identified priorities and themes of the cluster.

The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Cluster concentrates on the relationship between those three domains in and beyond Asian settings, and their intersections with the environment in the past, present and future.

The cluster currently brings together a diverse, interdisciplinary group of researchers who work on the following research themes:

i) climate change and carbon governance;

ii) planetary health and ‘Asian medicines’;

iii) energy transitions, infrastructure and space;

iv) critical minerals.

The cluster welcomes diversity in methodological approaches, fosters interdisciplinary practices and encourages collaborative research projects. In the current round of recruitment, we are particularly interested in hiring a postdoctoral research fellow with research interests at the intersection of STS and environmental humanities.

Given that a growing proportion of ARI’s funding is derived from external sources, strong preference will be given to candidates with potential to contribute to building competitive research grant applications.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Researcher will work under the supervision of the Cluster Leader and take the lead in duties such as organising workshops and conferences, participating in current cluster projects, and carrying out new projects (including applying for grant funding). Administrative duties and committee work will be assigned and form part of the position.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates must have fulfilled all requirements of securing a PhD from a reputable university at the time they take up their appointment at ARI.
2. If you are still a PhD candidate at the point of application, you may also apply provided that you are confirmed for graduation by your commencement date at ARI. An official letter from the Registrar’s Office of your university will be required to confirm the award of your PhD degree.
3. Candidates must have an existing track record of publication, and plausible plans for future high-quality publications to be completed at ARI.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

1. The appointment will be tenable for a period of two years.
2. Applications are invited for commencement in: Aug/Sept 2024 or Dec 2024/Jan 2025.
3. The Postdoctoral Fellowship remuneration is S$6,000 per month. This all-in sum is inclusive of stipends for housing and living expenses.

6. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible for provident fund benefits.

SingHealth Experimental Medicine Centre runs several core facilities for translational research in SingHealth as well as the National Large Animal Research Facility. Reporting to the Assistant Director, you will be responsible in supporting the implementation of policies and initiatives for animal husbandry and care.

The RF is also expected to execute optimization algorithms developed by the team to identify relevant regions of interest in the input parameter space. The work is critical in the goal of materials-by-design, especially considering sparse, yet well-labelled materials science datasets. Key Responsibilities:

The Research Fellow is expected to work in the space of High-Throughput experimentation and automated robotics for synthesis, thin film deposition and electrical and opto-electronic characterization. Specifically, the RF is expected to work on the following areas of research:

• Building a self-driving lab with robots, spin-coater and/or doctor blade coating systems, integrated with sample transfer and electrical and opto-electronic characterization.
• Operating and maintaining the robotic systems and working with protocols, interfacing with characterization equipment, environmental chambers, and a data management system.
