Research Associate (Hazard Modelling)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a research centre at NTU with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. EOS invites applications for the position of Research Associate for a research project involving the study of earthquake induced landslide, soil liquefaction hazards. We are looking for someone with a passion for making Singapore and Southeast Asia a safer and more sustainable place in the face of tectonic and volcanic hazards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with geophysical field preparation, sample collection, measurement and interpretation
  • Data mining and compilation of past and historical hazard records from database and literature
  • Numerical modelling and analysis of ground motion, landslide and liquefaction
  • Hazard mapping of a region, validated with past case studies
  • Guide and train undergraduates and new group members who join the group
  • Arrange logistics and handle administrative requirements associated with field work, locally and overseas
  • Assist with procurement of equipment and supplies, and similar administrative tasks
  • Assist with obtaining research permits, and writing and submitting quarterly reports
  • Participate in the preparation of presentations for conferences and manuscripts for publication

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in engineering, geography, geological, environmental sciences or relevant field
  • Some experience working on the above tasks shown above in the duties and responsibilities section
  • Willing to conduct field work in rural and urban environments, locally and overseas
  • Experience in geographical information system (GIS) and/or engineering modelling software
  • Strong verbal, written and time management skills
  • Willingness to work on occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends (would be compensated with time off in lieu as appropriate)
