Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) in Neotectonics

Nanyang Technological University

Nanyang Technological University company logo

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) in the area of tectonic geohazards, geology, and deformation.

ASE (www.ase.ntu.edu.sg) is an interdisciplinary school at NTU that integrates Earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability. EOS (www.earthobservatory.sg) is a research centre at NTU with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. EOS maintains a regional network of geophysical observation stations in collaboration with neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia, that are supported by the EOS Centre for Geohazard Observations, as well as a Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS). Computational resources are available through a dedicated cluster and collaboration with the High Performance Computing Centre of NTU. In addition, ASE, EOS and NTU host state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical analysis.

ASE and EOS seek a diverse and inclusive workforce and are committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

Applicants must have a PhD in geology, geophysics, or a related field, with two (2) years of relevant working experiences and show evidence of impactful independent research in the study of earthquakes and tectonics. In particular, we will consider a candidate’s past outputs, current research programme, likelihood to obtain future funding support, and potential to develop their own research leadership.

The successful candidate should demonstrate the potential to build a world-class research programme and a commitment to education and mentorship of students. They will be expected to build up, manage, and lead a pioneering research group, and to contribute effectively to our ambitions to provide Singapore and other countries in the region the knowledge needed to build societies that are resilient to natural hazards. The appointees will be encouraged to develop links with existing research groups across NTU, Singapore, and the region, and will be supported to build close links with other research groups, internationally, in solid Earth geoscience, and volcanic or tectonic geohazards. We also expect that the successful candidate will become part of the leadership team for a large, newly funded, interdisciplinary 5-year research project to study the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire and its hazards.

The successful candidate will also be expected to teach within ASE, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are particularly interested in candidates who would be interested in teaching structural geology and neotectonics, with courses to include overseas field experiences for the students.

Application Procedure

The Search Committee will begin reviewing applications from 25 October 2022. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Applicants are invited to submit their applications (cover letter, full CV, research and teaching statements, names and contact details of three referees) through the NTU career portal: https://ntu.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/Careers/job/Assistant-Professors--tenure-track--in-Neotectonics_R00011653
