Assistant Teacher - Music

Dulwich College (Singapore) is looking for a Music Assistant Teacher to provide administrative and organisational support to the Music Department in the Junior School, coordinating the allocation and the upkeep of the extensive instrument stock and resources for the strings, wind and brass programme. The role includes leading small ensembles and offering some support to children in lessons. The job would suit someone with excellent interpersonal skills, who is proactive and organized.

The duties and responsibilities of the role include:

  • To support in a class as decided by the Head of Junior School Music;
  • To log all instruments into the school database.
  • To log and oversee necessary instrumental repair works.
  • To manage the issuing of instruments, books and accessories to all students.
  • To support school performances by rehearsing groups of children. This may take place after school or at lunchtime.
  • To liaise with Finance and Procurement and complete paperwork for purchasing requirements as specified by Head of Music and Director of Music.
  • To communicate improvement works, as specified by Head of Music, to the College Operations Team, if necessary.
  • Managing the collection of resources from children leaving the College.
  • To take a leading role in the management of music events in the Junior School, including the setting up of equipment and liaising with the admin team;
  • To work with the Director of Music, and Heads of Music in all Schools, and the Marketing team to create content for social media and displays;
  • To support the class teachers in the learning of each child;
  • To work alongside the class teachers to create an environment in which the children’s learning flourishes;
  • To be responsible, with the class teachers, for the pastoral care of the children in their class and to be involved in the pastoral care of all children in the College;
  • To take part in the planning and preparation for learning both inside and outside the classroom as led by the class teachers;
  • To take responsibility for the management of classroom resources, the replenishment of materials, setting up of the classroom, creating displays and ensuring the safety of the teaching environment;
  • To be aware of, and take part in, the schools performance management framework and participate in training and development activities as required;
  • To facilitate the learning of individual children or a small group of children, guided by, and in consultation with, the class teachers;
  • To manage behaviour positively, as agreed and set out in the school policy;
  • To attend staff meetings and professional development activities as required;
  • To participate in the extra-curricular life of the children by leading, organising, or being involved in extra-curricular activities and concerts within the Junior School - this may include some weekend and after school work;
  • To undertake supervisory duties in the dining hall and playground as directed by the Head of Junior School Music;
  • To act as a role model, showing awareness of individual needs and responding to them;
  • Comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, welfare, security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting any concerns to the appropriate person.

All other duties commensurate with the post.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A minimum of ‘A’ levels;
  • Achievement of graded music examinations may be an advantage.
  • A degree in Music would be desirable but not essential
  • A minimum of one year’s relevant work experience, ideally gained in an administrative environment;
  • Experience of using computer systems, including Microsoft Office;
  • Experience of learning musical instruments;
  • Experience of working independently with little supervision;
  • Experience of working with children in a school environment would be an advantage.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills;
  • Excellent customer care skills, and the ability to relate well to children;
  • The ability to communicate effectively throughout the College;
  • A flexible approach to work, and the willingness to contribute to the team;
  • The ability to use own initiative to undertake required tasks.
