Travelling Service Engineer

Job Objectives

Provides “hands on” training to the engine crew during overhauls, monitors and controls the smooth operation of all engines (Main + Auxiliaries) on board the vessels and handles the provision of the required technical support and maintenance, in order to achieve the desired levels of operational performance, all in close cooperation with the overall responsible Technical superintendent assigned to the vessel


Key Accountabilities:

  • Reviews and is up-to-date with the developments in the maritime maintenance trends for engine overhauls and changes, in order to identify and propose improvements and technical solutions on client issues.
  • Monitors the effective operation of the vessels engines, identifying and reporting potential discrepancies from operational standards, proposing and upon approval implementing solutions that will enhance the efficiency, performance and safety of the vessels engines.
  • Implements the provided maintenance plan for the vessels engines and cooperates with the Vessels Technical Superintendent develop the actual maintenance arrangements, in order to comply with Group’s standards with minimum affect on the ships’ operation.
  • Co-ordinates and attends, whenever required, maintenance activities, including dry-docking, of the vessels and monitors that quality repair work is carried out according to plan and approved budget, providing support and guidance for the handling of equipment breakdown and malfunctioning, in order to support the on-time and cost effective repair of the vessels engines.
  • Supports the TSI in the development of the OPEX budget of the assigned vessels, including spare parts and technical training, and follows-up its accurate execution, monitoring the development of the actual operational costs throughout the year, and proposes adjustments and corrective actions, that will decrease the cost and increase the effectiveness of services.
  • Develops and timely provides to SMC the required reports and documents regarding vessels engines’ technical developments, maintenance activities, repair progress and current operational status of the engines and their actual performance level , in order to provide thorough information to the SMC concerning the operational readiness of each installed engine on board the vessel.
  • Attends on-board visits for the planned maintenance in close cooperation with the Vessels Technical Superintendent
  • Develops and implements a standard pre-overhaul/boarding procedure, whereas the engine crew is briefed on the oncoming overhaul (open-tool-box talk), video or other training and descriptive material is used, ended with a Q+A Session before the overhaul starts. Same should be conducted after the completed Overhaul
  • Arrange and provides “hands-on” Training of engine room crew during routine overhaul. Identifies additional training needs for the engine room crew based on evaluation and further prospects of potential candidates
  • Prior on board visits identifies and checks with the engine crew the completeness and working condition of the tools available on board. If necessary consults with vessels TSI for corrective actions
  • In cooperation with the ship identifies the needs for engine spares and resources and provides requests for quotation to the Vessels Technical Superintendent/Fleet Manager according to the needs of each vessel, and monitors that all required spare parts or services are accurately and timely provided to vessels, in order to enhance their effective operation.
  • Prepares all the necessary reporting following technical inspections of the vessels assigned, identifies and upon approval implements corrective actions in compliance with the inspections’ results and recommendations, in order to enhance the effective operation of vessels engines
  • Supports the accurate execution of engine overhaul and repair budgets, identifies and reports cost saving opportunities and proposes corrective actions in case of deviations, in order to ensure compliance with set targets.

Role Requirements Qualifications, Experience, Skills:


Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Marine Engineering or equivalent

Work Experience:

  • 4-6 years sailing experience as Engineer OR
  • 1-2 years of shore experience as a service engineer or superintendent with an Engine Manufacturer or Engine Repari company
  • Experience on various engine types

Job-Specific Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of vessels' engines technical requirements and safe working practices
  • Good project management skills
  • Good knowledge of the local and regional market of technical subcontractors
  • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Good organizational skills
