UWCSEA Dover has a vacancy for August 2024 for a Swiss-qualified Teacher of German with French and general subjects to the 12-15 age range. The teacher will serve the needs of Swiss students who will be transferring to the College from the Swiss School of Singapore. The teacher will also teach other students in those grades who have German as a mother tongue.

German classes are at Language A (mother tongue) level in language and literature. French classes are equivalent to foreign language level instruction.

As the College is an English-medium institution, a very good level of spoken and written communication in English is required for this post.

Main Responsibilities

  • The teacher should be willing to contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the German & French Language teams, the overall languages team and the broader Middle School team.
  • The teacher should construct learning experiences that challenge students, support the diversity of learners in each classroom and demonstrate a strong commitment to concept-based teaching and learning.
  • The teacher should ensure assessments support ongoing learning and provide timely, relevant and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments.
  • The teacher should demonstrate effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • The teacher should keep parents informed about the learning of their children, and be proactive in communication with parents.
  • The teacher should foster and cultivate passion for the German & French languages, especially in an environment where German students speak English the majority of the time.
  • The teacher should foster and develop awareness of Swiss culture to students who are from a Swiss German background but now living overseas.

Expectations and Standards

Person Specifications

  • A good degree and a recognized teaching qualification for the 11-15 age range from a German-speaking canton of Switzerland.
  • The ability to engage with students and to engender enthusiasm for learning is a pre-requisite for teaching at UWCSEA.
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academic; Personal & Social Education; Service; Activities; Outdoor Education.
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Development, both that which is mandated by the College and that which is identified by the teacher.
  • Pastoral expectations include the leadership of an advisory group.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their advisory group and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.
  • Applicants should be enthusiastic about teaching within a multi-cultural environment.
  • Flexibility of approach, a collaborative style and a real desire to work as part of a team are all essential pre-requisites.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners.
  • Applicants should have a passion for working with young adolescents and understand the unique developmental needs of 11–15 year olds.
