Construction painters have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

- Mixing paints, stains, and other materials to create custom colors using spray guns or paintbrushes
- Cleaning equipment before and after use to prevent the spread of contamination
- Applying paint to surfaces using brushes, spray guns, and other tools such as rags and scrapers
- Measuring and cutting wood or other materials to specified dimensions using saws and other power tools
- Applying wall paper or other materials to walls, ceilings, or floors
- Preparing surfaces such as walls or floors by cleaning them and removing old paint or other coatings
- Painting ceilings, walls, cabinets, doors, moldings, and other surfaces with brushes or spray guns
