Summary: This role is responsible for the effective delivery of company-wide environment & green transition strategy and of projects that are delivering on the strategy. As the company has a target of hitting zero emission by the year 2025, we look to heads across our different Hubs to help develop and test new approaches to policy and advocate this direction. This role is part of our wider leadership team, sharing in the leadership and management of the organisation and line managing the environment & green transition team.
Reports to: Managing Director, Fleet Management.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Develop a fuel efficiency program for implementation upon approval from the management team; Program to include but not limited to:
- measurement, reporting & management of fuel efficiency;
- operational improvements;
- Retrofit of existing ships
- Vessel reporting, performance monitoring, IT / BTT solutions to empower the managers to control & reduce CO2 emissions;
- Retrofit operational improvements including but not limited to:
- Trim Optimization;
- Selection of bottom paints;
- Monitoring hull & propellor smoothness/efficiency;
- Voyage planning/auto pilot settings for economical speed settings;
- Weather routing;
- SEEP
- Performance enhancing measures covering:
- Stern duct Becker Mewis pre-swirl;
- Propellor hub cap fins; new propellor/rudder configuration;
- De-rating main engine;
- New optimized bulbous bow;
- Variable speed electric motors and controls on all pumps, fans etc.;
- Optimization of hotel load
- Plan & Implement a measurement and reporting system for our CO2 emissions covering 4 measurements:
- energy efficiency operational indicator gCO2/tonne/n.mile;
- annual efficiency ratio gCO2/dwt/n.mile ;
- DIST kgCO2/n.mile ;
- TIME CO2/hour
- Research all CO2 reduction technologies for our existing fleets: retrofit ships; include in the specification for new buildings; operational performance enhancement, scrubbers etc;
- Build a database with costs and benefit analysis;
- Coordinate companywide efforts to ensure healthy following ups on outsourced measuring of CO2 emissions, various shipboard systems and retrofit of waste heat recovery systems;
- Establish a program of communication; change of culture; town hall meetings and including regular review during the EXCO meetings;
- CAPEX recommendations to the Management for retrofitting existing ships in order to reduce CO2 emissions;
- Involve in the process for fleet renewal and ordering new buildings that will be significantly more efficient than the ships they replace;
- Research suitable green fuels that our ships are able to store & ME’s burn them and their future availability.
- Develop a road map for meeting the IMO targets.

Requirements:
Education, knowledge and working experience
- Chief engineer;
- Vessel performance experience;
- Practical experience of achieving recognised success in developing and building strategies to win the adoption of policies on sustainability strategy;
- Independant in producing reports and works using powerpoint, excel and words.
