UWCSEA Dover Campus is looking for a Boarding Houseparent to join from August 2024 or earlier.

The houseparents play an important team role in ensuring the welfare of all boarding students and smooth operation of the boarding houses.

  • Key point of contact for boarding house students and their parents/guardians for the pastoral care and activities of Dover Boarding House.
  • Coordinate any administrative requirements for the boarding house [attendance, medical review and coordination and first response clinical care; student visa requirements, transportation coordination, personal expenses management] working with day parents, boarding management and external departments such as school and health service as needed.
  • Assist in developing and implementing, with the support of the Boarding Team, a pastoral care and education programme in line with UWC ethos and values for all students in the Boarding House. This covers educational, social, emotional, recreational, health, hygiene and other needs alongside the UWC programme.
  • Works with the Boarding House team to deliver student services to the Dover Boarding House. The boarding team takes responsibility for all functions of the boarding house under the direction of the Director of Residential Life.

Main Responsibilities

Pastoral Care:

  • To ensure a thorough understanding of College safeguarding policies, procedures and appropriate actions.
  • To provide the key point of contact between Boarders, their parents and the clinic, counsellors and other health professionals for physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Take responsibility for mentoring a designated group of boarders ensuring good record keeping and communication with interested parties such as parents, guardians, teachers, principals, counsellors and UWC Foundation as needed.
  • To lead or assist with grievances and disciplinary issues that arise within the framework of the College Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of a caring community by modelling positive and consistent attitudes and values to students. Providing advice, support and information to students in their study and recreational activities. Contributing positively to the team of boarding staff in the holistic operation of the Boarding House.
  • Promoting a positive approach to the tasks and activities required of all persons in a communal living situation. Communicating openly with students about the expectations and routines required for the effective operation of the Boarding House.

Operational Responsibility:

  • Contribute to the UWC/life skills program as required and cooperate with other staff and the Director of Residential Life in the day to day operation of the Boarding House.
  • Proactively communicate openly with other staff and the Director of Residential Life on all matters related to the life and operation of the Boarding House.
  • To direct and support day parents or assistant houseparents when working in the boarding house
  • To lead/oversee an aspect of the boarding house (example: UWC programme, life skills programme, catering, orientation, activities, finance or another area of operation) and evaluate the success of events/ projects and provide inputs and suggestions for future events/ projects

Person Specifications

  • Degree, diploma with the right experience may be considered
  • A good understanding and demonstrable alignment with the UWC mission.
  • The required Educare online safeguarding training modules
  • The post holder must have a proven record of delivering excellent pastoral care with several years of experience in international boarding to complement our existing team
  • Demonstrated ability to provide consistent and considerate supervision and discipline of adolescents and young adults
  • Demonstrated skills in establishing effective working relationships based on mutual respect between staff and students
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with a team and as an individual
  • An understanding of the organisational and operational practices appropriate to the position, growth and development of adolescents and young adults,legal requirements for the supervision of students
  • Demonstrated success in student leadership and a record of success in leading young people,supervising students in a residential environment, meeting deadlines and following procedures and able to use relevant technologies in administration
  • Communicate in a positive manner with boarding students and, where required by the Director of Residential Life, with parents
  • Communicate openly and respectfully with other staff members and the Director of Residential Life on all matters related to the life and operation of Dover boarding houses.
  • Weekday and weekend duties: To be on an agreed on duty rota and as exceptional needs arise
  • Holiday duties: Team cover short holidays, to not exceed 10 days
