JOB DESCRIPTION: Learning Support Teacher


Reports to: Division Principal, Head of SWELL


Main Working Relationships: The Learning Support Teacher has a role within whole school initiatives to improve outcomes for students with additional learning and support needs. The Learning Support Teacher is a member of the student support services team and works closely with the school psychologist, counsellors, administration, grade level leads health, and ELL departments.

Main Responsibilities:
To improve the quality of learning outcomes for students by providing teaching and learning best practices within the framework of the school’s Mission, Vision, Core Values, Learning Principles, Culture, and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes.


Required Qualifications:

  • BA in relevant field
  • Teaching credential
  • minimum 2 years experience as a full time teacher
  • Courses and/or certificate in working with students with learning support needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post graduate studies in learning support/special needs education
  • International school experience
  • 5 years employed as a Learning Support teacher

The Learning Support Teacher tasks are to:

  • Work collaboratively with the classroom teacher to support assessment for learning of their students with additional educational needs and to identify specific learning support needs
  • Identify specific learning support needs through analysis of assessment, referring to classroom performance and assessment, informal assessments, screening and psychological assessments and recommendations
  • Plan, implement, model, monitor and evaluate teaching practices for students with additional learning support needs
  • Plan, implement, model, monitor and evaluate personalized adjustments for learning where required, with the classroom teacher, student and/or parent or caregiver
  • Model exemplary practice when tailoring adjusted learning programs for students with
    additional learning needs
  • Maintain documentation for each student receiving additional learning support, PLP’s, reports, programming
  • Provide direct support for students with additional learning support needs through a range of strategies (including direct instruction, delivery of adjusted learning programs, assessment and monitoring of progress) including the areas of social integration, language and communication, literacy, numeracy and behavior. This may include students with confirmed disabilities (as described in the school’s Learning Support Policy).
  • Provide professional specialist advice, support and mentoring to classroom teachers on: how best to cater for the diverse learning needs in their classrooms; and how to effectively work in partnership with families to maximize learning opportunities for students at school and at home
  • Provide professional specialist advice and assistance to the school’s support services team, with regard to students with additional learning needs and assist with professional learning for class teachers and school learning support teachers within the school
  • Design and facilitate professional learning for classroom teachers to address current trends in necessary supports to ensure consistent implementation of interventions and supports

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safely and well-being of all students in accordance with CIS administrative policies and divisional procedures
  • Know, understand and support the school’s Mission, Vision, Core Values and Learning Principles.
  • Participate in the Individual Work Plan process (IWP):
  • Meet the expectations as outlined in the CIS Teacher Job Description, the CIS Teachers Standards, and the CIS IB Programme Expectations for Teachers.
  • Solicit feedback from parents or students via survey
  • Develop and implement an Individual Work Plan (IWP) that supports the Division Work Plan (developed from the school’s Strategic Plan).
  • Reflect individually and collaboratively (IWP Meetings with Principal) on the aforementioned components.
  • Provide feedback on the IWP process to school administrators.
  • Be actively involved in special events (Carnival, Talent Shows, Exhibition, etc.), and provide coaching as required and based on skill set.
  • Participate in one school committee each year
  • Complete the classroom inventory record
  • Be dependable and prepared for class (all materials set up and ready for student arrival; plans readily accessible)
  • Contribute to community building (IWP)
