Position Objective

The Math Coach will work closely with the Elementary School (ES) pedagogical leadership team, in particular the PYP coordinator, in leading curriculum development and collaborative planning times with grade level teams. The purpose of these collaboration times can vary from building teaching capacity, facilitating data talks about assessment, looking at documentation or evidence of learning and facilitating collaborative planning for math. The Math Coach will also work closely with the ES curriculum team in order to create year long overviews and review the alignment of the math curriculum. They will be involved with analyzing data for the purpose of guiding pedagogical decisions and conducting parent information sessions and workshops to support and deepen parent understanding of the SAIS math curriculum for our elementary mathematicians.

The Math Coach also primarily works with teachers and provides support through one to one coaching cycles in the classroom. This work will involve goal setting with teachers, micro-modelling parts of lessons, co-conferring and collaborating to plan a series of lessons that target specific student centered goals. The Math Coach will also work with measuring growth of students with teachers to see progress that was made. The Math Coach will work closely with the Elementary principal, ES Literacy Coach and PYP coordinator to identify trends and plan in response.

Responsibilities

The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact will be to adhered to and ensure compliance with the relevant Cognita Safeguarding; Child Protection Policy and Procedures at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, they must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Head or indeed to the Cognita Regional Safeguarding Manager so that a referral can be made accordingly to the relevant third party services.


Leadership

  • Reflect Stamford’s mission, vision, and values, modeling the school’s core principles.
  • Act as a participatory member of the ES leadership team,
  • Lead and support math learning initiatives
  • Build and sustain trusting relationships to cultivate a collaborative culture among staff
  • Collaborates with ES curriculum team to work on written curriculum documents including unit plans and curriculum overviews
  • Assist teachers in understanding and implementing the components of effective conceptual math lessons using guided inquiry as an approach and drawing on the PYP framework and AERO math standards
  • Facilitate data conversations, guiding teachers in examining student evidence (documentation of learning, summative assessments, MAP assessments, anecdotal notes etc)
  • Helps to facilitate weekly collaborative planning sessions with grade level teams, ensuring both vertical and horizontal alignment.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding and commitment to the Stamford teaching & learning policies, assessment policy, language policy and inclusion policy.

Coaching

  • Initiate and facilitate coaching cycles with regular schedules to support continuous growth with students and shift some teaching practice
  • Collaborate to plan math lessons and add to existing math unit plans
  • Co-teach, co-confer and micromodel parts of lessons in classrooms from G1 - G5
  • Strengthen knowledge in Mathematics content and pedagogy while supporting teachers in coaching cycles
  • Actively participate in and contribute to professional learning in teams.
  • Reflect on and measure progress.

Position Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to foster trusting, collaborative relationships among individuals and teams
  • High level of organization and attention to detail
  • Previous experience with the PYP Programme; preferably PYP teaching experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with data collection, analysis and evidence-driven instructional planning
  • Knowledge of the NWEA MAP Assessment
  • Previous curriculum development/instructional coaching experience
  • Demonstrates the Stamford Values – Courage, Ingenuity, Compassion, Integrity

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred
  • PYP experience
  • Education Leadership experience

Working Conditions

  • 5 days/week plus weekends as required.
  • Based at the Stamford American International School campus with occasional travel for the purposes of training/professional development
  • School holidays are paid and free except staff days and training days (please refer to the website to see the school calendar with school holiday dates)
