Back up Engineer

Summary

The Backup Assistant Lead Engineer is in charge of the Company’s backup operations including backup infrastructure support, troubleshooting, new backup provisioning, new projects support, capacity monitoring & planning, capacity upgrade, technology refresh and project management. The roles also include planning and execution in backup infrastructure upgrades, migrations and ensuring systems & backup devices are up-to-date with the latest patches and coherent across the organization. He/She maintains technical documentation for backup infrastructure and addresses multi-faceted issues in a collaborative manner with other departments, provides guidance to the team and assists in communications with stakeholders.


System Administration Processes

· Plan, design, perform day-to-day backup operation, maintenance, and advanced troubleshooting of

· systems

· Align backup administration with overall strategic IT service direction and business needs

· Be able to independently perform backup implementation and troubleshooting for different types of OS, Databases and Applications

· Participate and support in DR exercises to ensure DR readiness

· Plan and track budgets for maintenance, new implementation, technology refresh of backup devices

· Perform business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for spending and initiatives

· Manage and support internal and external auditors for backup operation audits

· Anticipate internal and/or external business challenges and/or regulatory issues

· Develop policies, procedures, and controls to ensure efficient backup and restoration process is in place.

· Be open and willing to perform cross-team training and support beyond backup infrastructure support


Develop New Systems

· Partner with stakeholders to recommend innovative and automated approaches for backup administration and operation

· Recommend and define systems requirements for new technology implementations to improve the efficiency, cost effectiveness and automation of processes whenever possible.

· Lead and perform Proof-of-Concept (PoC) of new technologies and devices

· Perform capacity planning and forecasting, work closely with various teams on their backup requirements and incorporate their requirements to the backup infrastructure

· Support backup implementation for users’ new projects and requirements


Optimize and Fine-Tune Systems Performance

· Recommend processed, product or service improvements, resource optimization and cost savings

· Oversee hardware, software and firmware upgrades and patch management

· Recommend new technologies, methodologies, systems or opportunities for cost savings, security and service quality improvement

· Monitor System performance and do capacity planning & performance tuning to optimize System performance, operations and better utilization of IT hardware resources.

· Regularly review and revise of backup Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions and procedures, and exercise & practice DR


IT Operations and Planning

· Plan and prepare annual budget for Backup infrastructure projects, technology refresh, maintenance & support renewal and manpower requirement.

· Implement Technology Refresh of systems and equipment

· Manage incident, problem and change management and service requests

· Manage the vendor and vendor selection process (calling for proposals, evaluation and awarding of tenders, etc.).

· Provide primary maintenance standby support.

· Manage projects and vendors for new implementations as well as support & maintenance of backup infrastructure


Requirements / Qualifications:

· Diploma or Degree in Computer Science or equivalent

· Must be a team player with at least 5 years’ experience in Backup technologies and operation support

· Experience of managing 24x7 operations for mission[1]critical services

· Experience in working with Data Protection using Veritas NetBackup and other backup tools

· Experience in supporting Veritas Clustering technologies and setup

· Good knowledge in configuring and troubleshooting Windows, Unix/Solaris/AIX/Linux, VMware, and RedHat Virtualisation

· Knowledge of working with Veritas disk appliance, Data-Domain or any disk-to-disk backup and Tape library like Quantum

· Good knowledge in scripting and automation will be an advantage


Note: Junior positition is also open to hire. iIf you have either experience in Linux environment or Back up and is eager to learn both do apply.
