Teacher Librarian [Early & Primary Years]

XCL World Academy is seeking to recruit an experienced Teacher Librarian [Early & Primary Years]. This is a full time 2 year contract position starting from 1 August 2024.


The Teacher Librarian designs, implements and evaluates the PreK to Grade 6, library programme in the School and ensures that the Library is a vibrant hub of learning, which is evidenced by a high level of activity and engagement from all school community members.


Main Responsibilities

Overview

This Job Description is to be read in conjunction with and as an addendum to the Class Teacher’s Job Description. Consistent with school policies, the Teacher Librarian will be responsible for the following key objectives:

  • To successfully manage the Library across the Early & Primary Years programmes establishing goals and expectations with both staff and students to ensure that the Library is used to its maximum potential.
  • To manage the day to day running of the Library and school satellite libraries.
  • To ensure that the resourcing of the Library meets the teaching and learning goals across the Early & Primary Years sections of the school.
  • To promote and participate in ongoing staff learning, training and development.
  • To teach classes as required, particularly in relation to the IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning skills, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
  • Any other duties as directed by the Head of School.

Curriculum

  • Creates and implements the PreK to Grade 6 Library Skills scope and sequence in line with the IB Standards and Practices.
  • Empowers students to be critical thinkers, researchers, digital citizens (ethical users) of gathered information and enthusiastic readers.
  • Develops innovative models of library services that support the needs and requirements of both IB pedagogy and XWA teaching principles and standards.
  • Collaborates with Principals, Grade Leaders and Subject Leaders to enrich lesson plans by incorporating information literacy skills.
  • Mentors students with their culminating projects i.e. Exhibition, Personal Project, etc.
  • Collaborates with teachers to design and teach for meaningful learning experiences within IB PYP Units of Inquiry.
  • Collaborates with language teachers to promote access to appropriate, levelled reading materials in diverse languages.
  • Organises and manages community events e.g. Book Week and Author visits to enhance the wider school curriculum for students.
  • Attends planning meetings to provide support to subject areas/grade levels.

Professional Development

  • Provides professional development opportunities for staff such that the library is used as a hub of learning by the entire school community.
  • Promotes the library’s resources by providing workshops to teachers and parents on a range of library related topics.
  • Uses professional networks to ensure the school is informed of the latest educational research and conveys this information to relevant members of the school community.
  • Provides leadership and expertise in selection, acquisition, evaluation and organization of information resources and technologies in all formats, as well as expertise in the ethical use of information.

Management and Collection Development

  • Manages the library staff and is responsible for the booking system of the library facilities.
  • Submits an annual budget to the Head of School which is reflective of the needs of the educational leadership team.
  • Works with the Head of Finance and Operations to ensure purchase orders for all library related resources are cost and time efficient. Ensures library materials arrive before the end of the academic year and are inventoried before the start of the next academic year.
  • Fosters positive relationships with external vendors.
  • Develops and implements a Library Plan for development in line with the Schools’ mission, vision and strategic aspirations.
  • Oversees the maintenance and updating of the Library Database and reviews the library usage data to determine needs for budgeting
  • Maintains access to online accounts, software subscriptions and subscribed periodicals.

Person Specifications

  • Preferred minimum 2 years of relevant IB programme experience from International School
  • Undergraduate degree from a recognized university or college
  • Evidence of continued relevant professional development.
  • Teacher professional certification specific to applied position
  • Demonstrates the ability to think strategically and creatively and is able to communicate ideas clearly.
  • Effective relationship, team building and communication skills with the ability to be motivational, adaptable, inclusive and resilient.
  • Has a sense of humour in daily interactions with students and staff.
  • Experience in teaching learners with diverse needs and EAL.
  • Management and leadership experience in a curriculum or similar role, including experience in curriculum coordination, instructional and assessment planning, and general teaching competencies.Possess skills and attitudes aligned to the purpose, mission and vision of XCL World Academy (Singapore)
  • Need clear eagerness, resilience and understanding to engage and collaborate in the development of a highly aspirational school
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to education and learning beyond the classroom.
  • Be flexible and willing to take on new challenges
