UWCSEA has a vacancy for August 2024 at its East Campus for Primary School Class Teachers (K1 to Grade 5- ages 4 – 11). This is a class teacher position with the possibility of a leadership role.

The successful candidate will be a highly resourceful and forward-thinking collaborator, passionate about delivering exciting learning. They will bring with them a passion for interdisciplinary learning and a rich understanding of concept based learning. The successful candidate will recognise the power of learner agency in building compassionate and efficacious students. They will also possess a range of strategies to build effective and engaging working relationships with students and colleagues.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide a happy, stimulating, safe learning environment for all children and bring a sense of energy, joy and fun to the classroom.
  • Plan, teach and assess through engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote agentic learning and the holistic development of each child.
  • Reflect continually on your craft as a teacher and commit to personal and professional development and growth.
  • Employ a wide variety of learning and teaching strategies including the use of new technologies to make learning both effective and enjoyable.
  • Work as a member of a grade team, planning learning engagements collaboratively, sharing resources and offering insight to the team in areas of curriculum specialism.
  • Enthusiastically participate in professional learning, both that which is mandated by the College and that which is identified by the individual.
  • Contribute to the continuous professional development of Teaching Assistants.
  • Integrate technology effectively within the classroom for learning, planning, assessment purposes and the documentation of student learning.
  • To build positive and effective relationships with all stakeholders.

Leadership (for the right candidate)

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Primary School's vision and direction, focusing on agency, internationalism, and sustainability through strategic plan goals.
  • Facilitate effective communication between the Primary Leadership Team and grade level teams to ensure cohesive collaboration.
  • Manage day-to-day student and parent matters, including attendance, welfare, and academic issues, and conduct follow-ups when required.
  • Support the team's professional development and well-being, organizing parent workshops, and leading initiatives for a positive learning environment.
  • Manage grade level operational budgets, oversee pastoral care, lead the implementation of the K-12 curriculum, and collaborate with other Heads of Grade to ensure adherence to school policies, particularly child protection issues.
  • This list is not exhaustive and includes all other tasks as reasonably directed by the Vice Principals and/or Principal.

Expectations & Standards

Person Specifications

  • A relevant degree in Primary Education from an accredited institution and a recognized professional teaching qualification or certification are essential.
  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years, classroom based teaching experience, preferably in international schools (4-11 year olds).
  • Experience teaching students who are English Language Learners
  • Experience of a concept based curriculum would be advantageous.
  • A committed and creative practitioner, you will be reflect on your own teaching and student outcomes, seeking out and implementing new ideas and innovative practice to raise achievement.
  • A passion for teaching and commitment to educating the whole child.
  • The ability to engage with students and to engender enthusiasm for learning is a prerequisite for teaching at UWCSEA.
  • A willingness to collaborate and share your specialist expertise, enthusiastic participation in and delivery of Professional Learning is expected. Evidence of regular and recent professional learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, written and spoken. The language of the workplace and the language of instruction is English.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners.

Knowledge of and experience of the following would be an advantage:

  • International curricula, their delivery and assessment
  • Concept-based teaching and learning - a desire to engage children in concept-based learning, where they develop big ideas both specific to subject areas and transcending them.
  • Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop approach
  • Reggio Emilia inspired, child centred, play based approaches
  • Creating agentic learning environments and opportunities
  • Honesty, integrity, compassion

Leadership (for the right candidate)

  • Teacher leadership and/or coaching experience in the Primary Years.
  • Up to date with current research in Primary pedagogies, agency and concept-based teaching and learning.
  • Experience leading and supporting teachers’ professional development.
