About the role

We are looking for a Manager - Global Freight Strategy to lead the dynamic evolution of the Simandou freight strategy. This incorporates safe operations and shipping for both exports and imports while maximizing value for stakeholders. The role will also include upcoming shipping decarbonization imperatives, supporting the marketing strategy, and optimizing a multitude of complex tradeoff considerations.

The incumbent in this position is accountable for the optimal strategy of port-to-port freight activities covering transshipment and seaborne shipping, including their interfaces, and operations.

Reporting to the General Manager, Chartering - in tandem matrix reporting to the Senior Manager Strategy, you will:

  • Develop an understanding of the overall commercial value drivers, sensitivities, and dependencies; provide clear and digestible insights from port-to-port value drivers (and how they relate to safe operations and shipping), and value maximization levers in an evolving shipping decarbonization horizon.
  • Refine value chain stakeholder mapping, inclusive of stakeholder interests, risks, and opportunities and progress these engagement plans across various teams.
  • Coordinate and support the development of the global freight portfolio and respective sourcing strategies alongside SMEs with consideration to mine production, and synergies across other freight books.
  • Maintain and refresh strategies as appropriate until ready to execute.
  • Lead the coordination of Simandou activities across Rio Tinto’s Marine businesses with relevant SMEs.
  • Lead additional Marine strategic portfolio initiatives as required.
  • [Dependent on candidate background and skillset], future potential development role to directly execute chartering newbuild strategies and be part of the chartering leadership team with responsibilities to lead portfolio decisions across various sizes.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Relevant Degree qualifications.
  • Ideal candidate comes with +10 years of experience in/across freight portfolio management, commodity marketing/trading, business strategy, project management, or consulting.
  • Strong strategic and commercial acumen; naturally a big-picture thinker who welcomes complexity and uncertainty yet executes and delivers independently with limited guidance.
  • Curious, analytical mindset; can deliver meaningful insights.
  • Ability to drive effective decision-making through strong communication and stakeholder management skills (inclusive executive management levels).
  • Ability to shape complexity into clear proposals, including through the development of articulate, compelling presentations and papers that focus on what decisions makers need to know.
  • Knowledge across dry bulk shipping markets including Sales & Purchase (S&P) and/or chartering/freight trading would be highly beneficial.
