You will be part of a dynamic and driven team of lawyers in the Asia General Counsel Organization. You will be primarily responsible for legal issues related to privacy and data for American Express businesses across Asia. This position will report to the Director & Counsel, Privacy APAC based in Singapore.
How will you make an impact in this role?
Your role will include the following:
- Data & Privacy Advice. Provide best-in-class strategic advice on applicable data protection laws, rules and regulations in Asia and provide privacy support to Amex initiatives, projects and new product launches, such as advising on the data privacy issues and providing practical solutions to mitigate privacy risks.
- Drafting of privacy documents. Advise on, review, negotiate and draft data protection terms in a wide range of commercial agreements, privacy policies, privacy notices, customer disclosures, data processing agreements, etc.
- Privacy Compliance. Advice on and help manage privacy compliance requirements across Asia
- Legal Horizon Scanning Proactively monitor new privacy and data related legislative and regulatory developments across Asia and provide practical legal advice in cross-functional multinational regulatory change management projects to ensure compliance with applicable laws and mitigate legal risk.
- Manage Regulatory Affairs. Interpret and advise on emerging laws and advocate on behalf of Amex in industry associations, monitor data & privacy trends across the region, including in relation to new technologies such as Gen AI, to determine trends and possible issues for American Express to address, including development of public policy positions
- Collaboration. Collaborate with colleagues in a matrixed global organization, including legal colleagues in the Asia region as well as colleagues from the Global Privacy & Data Law Group
- General. Provide general guidance and advice to management on legal and regulatory matters and reporting, administrative and legal activities that arise in a Fortune 500 company.
Minimum Qualifications
- Qualified and admitted/licensed lawyer in a Commonwealth jurisdiction. Candidates should have at least 4-8 years post-qualification experience, with at least 2 years of relevant privacy experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal environment. Prior in-house experience with financial institution or multi-national corporation preferred. Candidates with Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) accreditation and/or with prior experience engaging with policy makers on legislative consultations preferred.
- Communication. First class oral and written communication skills, in particular, the ability to explain complex legal matters clearly and concisely to non-specialists.
- Professional poise. Maintains grace under pressure and demonstrates the ability to impart discipline and calm to stressful situations. Holds their own in live discussions where differing views are expressed. A persuasive advocate who is not afraid to convey unwelcome messages yet lays out a path to practical solutions.
- A self-starter who takes ownership. Takes the initiative to learn independently rather than passively. Sees what needs to be done and then does it. Takes responsibility for understanding and solving problems.
- Energetic and practical application of legal skills and knowledge to business situations and problems.
