Reports to: Principal
Description: Responsible for leading and monitoring development of interior design direction for projects, in collaboration with Project Manager and/or Principal the design of interiors projects throughout the design development, construction document and supervision phases.
Duties and responsibilities:
Evaluates project information, confers and corresponds with client representatives in coordination with the Project Manager/Principal to determine project parameters and requirements.
Develops design concepts for project(s).
- Leads design development of client’s interior program through development of photographic image studies.
- Develops basic interior design to meet the client’s programmatic requirements and assure technical suitability.
- Develops conceptual ideas graphically.
- Leads design charettes.
Participates directly in each project from programming through project completion.
Leads presentation and design drawings.
Designs with a minimum of supervision.
- Develops block plans and bubble diagrams.
- Leads and reviews design details.
- Corrects / revises drawings with minimal supervision.
Coordinates with design team to ensure integration of design and interior design elements.
- Provides guidance to other members of the design team to ensure that design documents are in appropriate formats.
- Participates in all charettes.
- Monitors and sometimes coordinates the design work of consultants.
Is responsible for quality control for the interior design function, including:
- Accuracy of each segment of work as it is completed.
- Conformance to company design standards.
Project Management
- Establishes program with Project Manager/Principal.
- Responsible for all projects within the team.
- Participates in determining the skills required of other team members for the project and the selection of those team members.
- Prepares progress reports.
Alerts Project Manager to any changes in scope, lack of information or decisions from client.
Oversees interior design aspects of construction:
- Assists with construction oversight for general conformance with the interior design concept.
- Responds to construction questions as they relate to interior design issues.
Directs / supervises the gathering of the technical specifications for various interior design elements (FF&E).
- Selects and directs materials for project.
Confers and corresponds with client representatives, to determine project parameters / requirements; participates in design presentations.
Directs construction of finish boards.
Participates in the development of “in-house” design standards; assures that design policies, procedures, standards and philosophies are adhered to.
Responsible for personal and staff development
- Performs senior staff development duties such as mentoring, training, supervising and directing junior staff.
- Participates in management and leadership groups.
Education: Degree in Interior Design or Architecture from accredited university.
License: NCIDQ, CCIDC, NCARB, ASID, AIA or comparable license or certification required.
Experience: 8 + years’ extensive experience in all phases of interior design, including substantial and varied experience involving responsible planning and interior design of complex projects. Substantial experience with applications of engineering technology, interior design materials and construction methods.
Skills and Abilities: Excellent drawing and detailing skills, AutoCAD proficiency; and, excellent organization skills. Ability to develop project schedules and phasing plans. Ability to edit and assemble specifications. Excels at mentoring and developing junior staff. Ability to travel to client and project sites.
Knowledge Expectations: Thorough knowledge of interior design practice with emphasis on programming, planning and design, including building materials and construction methods, building costs and building codes. Working knowledge of structural, mechanical, electrical and acoustical engineering. Complete understanding of working drawing format.
Profile: Team player; strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail; ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects and tasks.
Performance Expectations: Can prepare construction documents with basic knowledge of detailing for interior construction; ability to draft at good production level. Very strong sense of design, color, texture, and scale. Resourcefulness in researching sources of fabrics, furniture, design elements, etc.
