Reporting to the Head of Fleet Management, this position serves as a business manager who is responsible for all shipboard performance with regards to safety, technical, operation (fuel) and maintenance. He leads the Ship’s Master and Chief Engineer(i.e. Top2) of the assigned vessels.
Job Accountabilities/Key Responsibilities:
- Ensures vessels are operating in compliance with all Maritime safety rules and regulations and Berge Bulk’s Safety Management System (SMS). Actively promotes a safety culture on board on all assigned vessels.
- Manages vetting, PSC and Class performance. Ensure compliance with all relevant international and local regulations and that all vessel certification and surveys for class, flag and international requirements are compiled and maintained. Ensures implementation, follow up and follow through on all corrective/preventive actions.
- Reviews and approves the procurement of all ship-spares and services to be provided to assigned vessels with support from Procurement Team.
- Manages the top 2 and manage crew matters with the support from the Marine HR Team. Responsible for communicating expectations to Top 2; manages their performance and provides good leadership and support to them.
- Researches technical information related to equipment breakdowns and proposes holistic solutions that will improve the long-term performance in the assigned vessels.
- Monitors and analyses ship performance (Fuel, Lub Oil, etc) together with the Top2 on board.
- Works with Commercial and Operations team to ensure compliance with charter-party terms of employment and other commercial concerns.
- Prepares budgets for the yearly operation of assigned ships, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc services/ship-spares within required timelines.
- Monitors and keep tracks of expenses of assigned vessels against the budget assigned.
The ideal candidate takes initiative to continually improve the performance of assigned vessels and the team work and working relationship between vessel and office. He/she is self-driven, has the ability to multi-task and possess good communications, problem-solvings and follow-up and follow-through skills. This person is expected to demonstrate positive working attitude and has possess proven ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic working environment.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Preferably holding a Class I (Chief Engineer or a Ship Captain equivalent) Certificate or any mechanical/electrical engineering degree.
- At least 3-year managerial experience handling vessels of Cape size and above (i.e. Alframax, VLOC or VLCC)
- Prior experience as Vessel Manager/ Fleet Manager or relevant shore-based positions preferred.
- Fluent in English
