Senior Tax Accountant

Purpose of the Role

  • Support the activities relating to Group’s international tax strategy and transfer pricing model, coordinating external advice as necessary to create and maintain an optimum tax structure and minimising the Group’s direct and indirect tax cost and exposure.
  • Ensure all global tax compliance obligations are met and the returns are consistent with the planning structures in place and for ensuring the accurate reporting of tax charges and liabilities under IFRS.
  • Support in providing appropriate tax advice when considering any business development opportunities and international trading scenarios.
  • Liaise with local external tax partners.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support in providing quality tax advice, directly or indirectly through advisors to design, implement and maintain an optimum Group structure to minimise exposure to direct taxes.
  • Co-ordinate the preparation of all tax returns ensuring these are consistent with the global tax and transfer pricing model.
  • Work closely with the Group’s Treasury and Business Development functions to ensure that the correct tax advice is obtained for all new business development opportunities.
  • Support in designing and maintaining, working closely with the core Finance department and external tax advisors, the Group Transfer Pricing model.
  • In conjunction with the Finance department ensure that all tax statutory reporting obligations are maintained in accordance with IFRS
  • Maintain an up-to-date tax compliance status ensuring that estimated payments of tax are appropriate and reconciled to the financial statements and latest tax returns.
  • Support ad hoc tax queries on direct and indirect taxes throughout the group, either personally, or ensuring that the appropriate external advice is obtained where necessary to minimise the Groups exposure to tax risk.
  • Support the maintenance of forecast of the annual current tax charges for inclusion in the Group’s quarterly financial reporting.
  • Support in liaising with the tax department of the Group’s immediate parent, MISC as a possible source of Malaysian corporate tax advice and as managers of the wider Group’s tax risks.
  • Coordinate and reply to internal auditors, tax authorities or custom on tax queries or if tax audits are carried out.
  • Assist in internal initiatives to improve processes of collecting tax-related information and tax filing.
  • To comply with Company’s policies and Code of Conduct and Business Ethics (CoBE)
  • Any other duties as assigned from time to time.

Requirements

  • Degree in Accounting/Taxation
  • Member/affiliate of SIATP/ISCA or other recognised professional accountant/taxation institutes
  • Minimum 5 years’ tax experience in public accounting firm (Big 4 preferred) and/ or MNC, or with IRAS, handling direct and indirect taxes, at least in a regional role but preferably in a global role.
  • Prior experiences with maritime industry are preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent knowledge of tax compliance, corporate tax, personal income tax, indirect taxes, withholding tax, tax treaties, mergers and acquisitions, repatriation and distribution of profits, group relief, loss relief, tax incentives (especially shipping related), tax exemptions, tax audits and investigations, tax case laws, tax administration, tax planning, international taxation laws and regulations, and tax accounting.
  • A self-starter and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good knowledge of accounting, strong Excel and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of SAP to enable data extract and reconciliation.
  • Deadline-oriented, eyes for details and sense of urgency on tax returns.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Pleasant personality, team-player, mature thinking, proactive attitude, resourceful and hands-on with good initiative.
