As a CO+I Principal Engineer, you will perform a key role in delivering and managing the critical environment infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform. Responsibilities
As a Principal Controls Engineer your key responsiblites are outlined below:
- Collaborate with Engineering and Operation teams to gain a comprehensive understanding of the critical environment (CE) designs and operational procedures for colocation data centers. Identify any gaps in these designs and processes and work closely with relevant stakeholders to address and eliminate these risks. This is to ensure the reliability and efficiency of critical data center operations.
- Lead the technical review and analysis of design documents for mechanical systems involving BAS critical environment instrumentation systems, associated controls, electrical systems and monitoring, and overall network topology at Operations turnover, ensuring that colocation data centers comply with Microsoft’s requirements.
- Require a comprehensive understanding of data center controls and operational experience.
- Review the scope of upgrading the controls infrastructure in colocation data centers to improve site utilization.
- Provide guidance to Operations teams through change management on controls systems, troubleshoot BAS and EPMS issues, drive root cause analysis and work with colocation data centers on the resolution. Knowledge of 5 Whys or alternative problem solving techniques would be a requirement and the use of which to investigateunderlying issues such as system design, staffing models, competency, procedures, site requirements, etc.
- Lead technical reviews with colocation data centers to complete system reliability studies.
- Active contribution and participation in the commissioning and validation of system performance, quality, and reliability.
- Perform forensic analysis on incidents which have occurred within the data center infrastructure. Knowledge of FMEA or other alternative process related failure analysis would be an advantage.
- Position as a subject matter expert with the ability to discuss in depth the instrumentation and controls aspects of data center functions, as well as the potential failure modes in critical environments.
- Analyze the performance data of equipment and system to identify potential issues through trend analysis.
- Provide support in resolving operational issues encountered in the production data centers, either remotely or on-site.
- Review compliance with existing corrective and preventative maintenance programs to enhance operational readiness.
- Proactive in driving implementation of lessons learnt from analysis across multiple design, construction, and operational organizations.
- Work with Design Engineering and Site Operations Engineers to establish visual standards, process improvement and error proofing systems to drive efficiency within the business.
- Able to travel to colocation data centers in APAC for onsite assessments when required.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in related engineering field.
• Professional engineer in the branch of Electrical Engineering with a certificate from their state’s or country’s licensure board
• In-depth knowledge of Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Branch Circuit Monitoring Systems (BCMS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), SCADA Systems and Process Controls.
• In-depth knowledge of open BAS protocols and communications - BACnet, LON, MODBUS, Ethernet, Web-Services, html, and others.
• Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to details.
• Proficiency in creating and delivering presentations using Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
• Proficiency in conducting intricate and data-driven business case analysis to provide robust justification for making technical decisions.
Experience Required:
• Experience working in mission critical environments that require precise conditions for their operations.
• Minimum 15 years’ experience in mechanical controls engineering, electrical controls engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience in technical discipline specific to HVAC, building automation and EPMS.
• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in consulting engineering, system integration, system manufacturing and/or operation with minimum of 7 years’ experience as lead engineer.
• Strong experience with the operation and maintenance of building cooling and related mechanical systems (HVAC, Chilled Water, DX Refrigerant, Evaporative, and related controls systems).
• Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages.
• Presented and communicated with C-suite executives at least every quarter.
