Research Assistant (Microbially Influenced Corrosion)

The Asian School of the Environment at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is currently seeking to recruit a Research Assistant for an interdisciplinary project aimed at understanding the mechanism of microbially influenced corrosion in the deep sea. The Research Assistant will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in biological sciences, chemistry and material science and involves both field and laboratory studies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experiments on microbial communities to investigate microbiologically influenced corrosion mechanisms at both ambient and elevated pressures. This will entail characterising the growth of the community, evaluating biofilm formation on the metal coupons and some basic materials characterisation to evaluate the degree of corrosion.
  • Developing and following strict protocol to ensure that the corrosion products are maintained in an anoxic environment.
  • Maintain growth cultures at high hydrostatic pressure
  • Help with planning and logistics of fieldwork in remote locations
  • Responsible for biological testing of antifouling surfaces

Job Requirements:

  • BSc in Microbiology, or a related subject
  • Preferably possess experience in the fields of Microbiology or Biochemistry
  • Preference will be given to candidates that have a working knowledge of biofilms, microbial growth and imaging based approaches.
