The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 12-month contract at the National Institute of Education/ Humanities & Social Studies Education Academic Group.
Project Title: AI Urbanism in Singapore
Project Introduction: The objectives of the proposed research, first, to extend existing scholarship on Singapore’s state-developed digital technologies and smart governmentality by deploying a qualitative study on how citizens interact, participate, live with and through these novel digital solutions for the administration of public services and goods. Specifically, the proposed study explores citizenry usage of interventions such as National E-Payment, National Digital Identity and Gowhere.sg (which were deployed during the pandemic and beyond) and how they alter and shape citizen subjectivities, practices, and engagement with government, reconfigure social-technical formations of citizenship, as well as pushes the frontiers of an AI-driven Smart Nation. Second, this research will also examine and analyse what are the challenges of developing and deploying these digital applications by policymakers, and what are the contours and nuances of digital anxieties that elderlies face and in what ways they negotiate the digital everyday rhythms of Singapore.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences with an emphasis in one of the following: Geography, Sociology and/or Urban Studies
- Strong academic writing skills in English
- Experience in qualitative research
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to independently conduct interviews in Singapore
- Good interpersonal and oral communication skills
Preferred
- Ability to use computer software packages (e.g. SPSS, data analysis software, Basic GIS software)
- Positive attitude towards learning and doing research
- Ability to manage project related administrative work
Responsibilities:
The job scope of this Research Assistant will include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Prepare research reports including literature reviews, academic writing, admin and library work
- Assist with data collection, interviewing, analysis, and other research-related activities
- Liaise with research participants and other stakeholders, arrange meetings, prepare schedules, etc.
- Help in organizing events, talks, seminars etc. in the Academic Group
- Other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator
