- Ensuring all assigned Science labs are adequately maintained and resourced with necessary instruments, equipment, glassware and apparatus to support scheduled lab activities for teaching and learning
- Planning daily lab activities and duties for the assigned labs
- Being in charge of procuring and preparing necessary teaching materials, chemicals, instruments, equipment, glassware and apparatus for scheduled lab activities
- Ensuring all lab supplies and resources are sufficient, safe to use, well-maintained and set up properly prior to the lab activities
- Performing, or assisting in, the trial of experiments prior to the lab sessions and providing recommendations for improvement where necessary
- Operating lab equipment by following operating instructions and troubleshooting equipment faults or breakdowns
- Performing, or arranging for, equipment and instrument maintenance and keeping maintenance records
- Being in charge of procuring and maintenance of stock for teaching materials, chemicals and consumables, and employing inventory controls for cost effective operations
- Ensuring the procurement process is compliant to the current procurement policies and procedures and ensuring all procurement documentation is well-recorded and maintained
- Coordinating with teaching and lab staff and ensuring risk assessments are carried out and safety protocols are complied with
- Providing advice on the safe use of lab equipment, facilities and resources
- Monitoring the performance and professional development of the assigned Lab Officers and providing necessary on-the-job training for them
- Monitoring budget utilization and maintaining expenditure records
- Maintaining standards of safety and security within the assigned labs, conducting lab safety inspections and ensuring all lab safety equipment are well-maintained
- Ensuring proper waste disposal procedures are carried out
- Providing technical advice and support to teaching staff/specialists and students
- Any other duties assigned by the school
Skills & Competencies
- Diploma in Chemisty or relevant
- Strong scientific knowledge and technical experience in terms of general/specialized science lab processes and procedures
- Knowledge of preparing and standardizing chemicals used in labs
- Knowledge of safe storage of lab equipment and materials
- Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation as applied to the lab environment
- Good supervisory skills with ability to liaise well with others and delegate tasks fairly and effectively
- Able to work independently, and in a team within and across different Science labs (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Research) with a positive attitude
- Excellent and accurate record-keeping skills, strong IT skills and effective communication skills
- Strong organization and time management skills and able to work on tight deadlines, multiple tasks and under pressure
- This is a 2-year contract (renewable)
