Wine Category Manager

Job Purpose

To proactively manage and develop key Wine Categories for specific countries/regions through co-ordination with Principals and sales teams to drive targeted volumes and profit. To manage and mentor wine brand manager(s) to achieve expected results, contractual obligations, and distribution for specific wine agencies within the portfolio through set marketing and sales programmes.


Key Position Accountabilities:


The job holder is responsible and accountable for (but not limited to) the following:

· To produce and implement annual marketing plans for key wine principals such that the brand and volume objectives are achieved within agreed cost parameters.

· Execute marketing activities with and for wine principals when required.

· To supply monthly reports to management and key principals by agreed deadlines so that they have up to date information on sales performance and progress against marketing plans.

· Act as a liaison between wine principals and the sales team

· Train the salesforce in how to gain the most effective sales and displays so that sales and merchandising objectives are met.

· Liaise with agencies and other third parties to ensure that promotional and point of purchase materials are produced on time and within budgeted cost.

· Communicate promotional mechanics and objectives to the sales force sufficiently in advance so that effective sales can be executed.

· Work within the field salesforce to ensure that both they and customers fully understand promotional mechanics and logistics.

· Report on and track progress and performance of the key sales channels

· Organise, execute and man consumer and trade event activities (i.e., wine dinners and tastings).

· Track A&P spend managing spend vs budget and so that variances to plans can be highlighted to management.

· Oversee and control stock forecasts, orders, and levels of stock to ensure adequate coverage for all channels in a cost-effective manner.

· Management and mentoring of at least one (3) wine brand manager / hold regular one-to-one meetings and track progress against a set of clearly defined KPAs.

· Develop brand manager(s) through on-the-job training and by setting personal development goals with a view to their succession into category manager position.

· Perform other duties as requested by the Line Manager.


Selection Criteria

  • Good working knowledge of the On-trade, Retail, and other sales channels/business
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills
  • Proven track record of managing promotional activity and a good understanding of the brand/marketing function.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Sound knowledge of wine as a product and the wine industry as a whole
  • Leadership, man management and motivation skills
  • WSET Level 3 or similar knowledge level
