We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Operational Safety Manager to oversee and ensure the operational safety of our fleet of autonomous prime movers. As the Safety Person in Charge, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing safety procedures and protocols, conducting safety training, and monitoring and improving safety performance across our operations. This position requires exceptional knowledge of safety practices, strong process and procedural writing abilities, and the ability to be present on the ground during 24/7 operations.
Role responsibilities
- Develop, document and implement comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures for our autonomous vehicle fleet, with a focus on operational safety.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, standards, and guidelines, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including research, engineering, operations, and maintenance, to integrate safety requirements and considerations into all aspects of fleet operations.
- Provide safety training to employees and contractors, ensuring they are well-versed in safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and safe work practices.
- Maintain accurate safety records, incident reports, and documentation of safety-related activities.
- Investigate and analyze accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and develop and implement corrective and preventive measures to mitigate future risks.
- Conduct safety meetings and toolbox talks to promote safety awareness and address safety concerns.
- Monitor and analyze safety performance metrics, identify trends, and implement strategies to continually improve safety performance.
- Stay informed about emerging safety technologies, industry trends, and regulatory changes, and make recommendations for their implementation as appropriate.
- Collaborate with customers’ regulatory team and participate in safety-related audits and inspections.
- Provide on-the-ground support and supervision during 24/7 operations, ensuring compliance with safety policies and procedures.
- Foster a culture of safety by promoting and encouraging active employee engagement and participation in safety initiatives.
Required experience
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Engineering, or a related field (equivalent experience may be considered).
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other relevant safety certifications strongly preferred.
- Proven experience in operational safety management, preferably in the autonomous vehicle industry or a similar high-risk environment.
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and best practices, such as OSHA, ISO 26262, and SAE J3016.
- Excellent writing skills with the ability to develop clear and concise safety policies, procedures, and training materials.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting safety audits, inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
- Ability to analyze data and metrics to identify trends, assess safety performance, and recommend improvement strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and regulatory agencies.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to drive a safety culture throughout the organization.
- Flexibility to work on-site during 24/7 operations and respond to safety-related incidents or emergencies when required.
- Knowledge of autonomous vehicle technologies, AI, and robotics is a plus.
