Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Senior Research Fellow in the Synthetic Biology Translational Research Program (TRP), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Appointments will be made on 1-Year contract basis.


Purpose of the post

The Senior Research Fellow will be responsible for, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator and a team of researchers on the goals set out for the projects of interest. The SRF’s principal role will be to work on enhancing tools of the Enzyme Function Initiative at National University of Singapore (EFI@NUS), as part of the SynBio-AI Innovation Accelerator of the National Centre for Engineering Biology. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing our understanding of complex biological systems through the application of advanced bioinformatics techniques. The ideal candidate will have expertise in quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS), and imputation analysis. The role also requires the candidate to work closely with other stakeholders such as but not limited to: NUS SynCTI, NSCC, University of Illinois, AI.SG, NCEB.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Research Fellow is expected to involve, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Genomic Analysis:Proficiency in analyzing next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets, including whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and whole-exome sequencing (WES).
    Variant calling expertise, covering single nucleotide variants, structural variants, and copy number variants.
    Mutational signature analysis to unravel genomic alterations.
  2. RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and Methylation Data Analysis:RNA-seq analysis using tools such as STAR, DESeq2, PEER, LeafCutter, featureCounts, TopHat, and Cuffdiff.
    ChIP-seq data analysis utilizing Bowtie and MACS, and methylation data analysis with Bismark and GeneSpring.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Diverse Population Studies:Experience working with multiple genetic datasets from diverse populations and integrating them for comprehensive analysis.
  2. Publicly Available Databases:Utilize data from well-known databases such as but not limited to; Gencode, ENCODE, PsychENCODE, TCGA, Roadmap Epigenomics Project, GTEx, CMC, 1000 Genomes Project, UK BioBank, dbGAP, dbSNP, NCBI GEO and EFI.
  3. Data Management/Analysis Tools:Proficiency in utilizing data management/analysis tools such as SAM tools, BCF tools, VCF tools, BED tools, BedOps, PLINK, SnpEff, EigenStrat, Picard, GATK, Annovar, Homer, FastQC, and Galaxy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. High-Performance Computing (HPC):Operate in a Linux environment, demonstrating proficiency in shell/bash scripting and familiarity with batch scheduling systems (SLURM and PBS).
  2. Programming and Statistical Analysis:Proficient in programming using Perl and Python.
    Programming, data wrangling, and statistical analyses using R.
  3. Web Development and Database Management:Web development skills using HTML, PHP, CGI, JavaScript, and JQuery.
    Database management using MySQL.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, or a related field.
  2. Proven track record of research achievements in the field of genomics and bioinformatics.
  3. Strong publication record demonstrating expertise in relevant analyses.
  4. Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  5. Has strong knowledge and skills in HPCC.
