Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Protein Sequence Analysis), BII

A*star Research Entities

Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated and talented individual to join us as an Epidemiological Modeller. The successful candidate will develop and apply cutting-edge models that integrate large datasets of genomic sequences and social media content to understand and forecast disease transmission dynamics. They will also have access to a wealth of genomic and social media data, and will be responsible for conducting analyses that inform public health policy and decision-making.

The successful candidate will join the Protein Sequence Analysis group (https://www.a-star.edu.sg/bii/research/bsfd/psa) at the Bioinformatics Institute, which is part of the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research in Singapore (A*STAR Singapore). Our group plays important technical and scientific roles in GISAID (https://www.gisaid.org), which makes viral sequences available freely whilst safeguarding depositors’ data rights. As such, the selected candidate will be at the forefront of global genomic surveillance, and will get to interact with public health stakeholders regionally and internationally. There are also ample opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from the rest of A*STAR.

The Principal Investigator (Dr. Joses Ho) has deep expertise in robust statistical analyses and data visualization. An essential member of the technical team at GISAID, he tracks emergent SARS-CoV2 mutations across the globe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement mathematical models to describe disease transmission dynamics, incorporating genomic and social media data where appropriate.
  • Conduct statistical analyses to explore the relationship between disease transmission, genomics, and social media activity.
  • Work collaboratively with public health officials to identify key research questions and inform public health policy.
  • Communicate research findings through scientific publications and presentations.
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest research and developments in epidemiological modelling, genomics, and social media.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, applied mathematics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in statistical modelling, especially experience with infectious disease models.
  • Deep experience in modern programming languages such as R and Python.
  • Well-versed in drawing insights from large datasets, including genomic and social media data.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

If you are passionate about applying cutting-edge models (that integrate genomic data and social media data) to understand and control disease transmission, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity!

The above eligibility criteria are not exhaustive. A*STAR may include additional selection criteria based on its prevailing recruitment policies. These policies may be amended from time to time without notice. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
