Research Fellow (Biodiversity)

The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) invites applications for the position of Research Fellow with Asst. Prof. Eleanor Slade’s research group. This position is supported by a Tier III grant to establish a Climate Transformation Programme (CTP) at NTU. As part of this programme the Biodiversity Cluster will study the impacts of climate and land use change on the biodiversity, carbon sequestration and ecosystem functioning of the South East Asian region.

The Research Fellow will be responsible for (i) organizing and conducting field work on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in urban, agricultural and forested environments within South East Asia, (ii) setting up experiments and measurements aimed at understanding how biodiversity and related ecosystem functions respond to climate change and land use impacts, and (iii) seeing this work through to publication in major research journals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement fieldwork and laboratory analysis on the impacts of climate and land use change on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in urban, agricultural and forested environments within South East Asia
  • Data management and statistical analyses
  • Work effectively with project PIs and local collaborators
  • Mentor junior colleagues and students
  • Writing and publication of results in peer-reviewed journals

Job Requirements:

  • PhD degree in ecology or closely related field, with a focus on biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem ecology
  • Experience working with tropical ecosystems
  • Knowledge and preferably experience of molecular and/or stable isotope techniques
  • Fieldwork experience in forested ecosystems, and in sometimes challenging field conditions
  • Experience with statistical analysis with R
  • Prior experience in publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Ability to work independently to develop research and execute fieldwork in tropical environments, in conditions that are often challenging
  • Collaborative, with interest to work with other researchers and scientists (this is a large team project) to produce high-quality and impactful research
  • Interest in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, restoration, and tropical forests and urban systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and preferably Malay (or willingness to learn Malay), for analysis of data relating to South East Asia
